Woofer Wailer.

Post by Blurillaz »

I was down in the cities, so I checked out American Guitar and Band because they have Dr. Scientist pedals. Sadly they were all sold out of the Frazz Dazzler I so Desperatly wanted to play, but I tried the next Dr. Scientist dirtbox, the Woofer Wailer. Plugged a Strat into a Zinky Blue Velvet with the Woofer wailer, and all I can say is... This is seriously the best tube screamer I have ever played. Yes, I've played a real Tubescreamer, but I just loved the tone coming out of this stompbox. Nice, singing sustain, and if you kick the amp into IT'S overdrive channel you get some nice crunchy distortion. Sadly, I didn't have my money with and my parents think $200 is too much for anything musical... Not to mention it had sweet graphics :thumb:

How many have you guys made? I checked the number on the back and it said 67... I thought you would've made more, but maybe it's not too populaur. :idk:

Hey B-man, thanks for checking out a Wailer... glad to hear you liked it!

It's definitely not our most popular pedal... we've only made about 75 Woofer Wailers. (I don't number the local store the same as all the other stores for some reason and that's where the other 10ish have gone, they're popular at the Acoustic Music Shop in Edmonton at least)! AG&B actually orders more Woofer Wailers than most places, they've got 3 in the batch we're making now.

Wailers just aren't ordered much.. stores usually order 10 to 30 Reverberators, 3 to 10 each of the other pedals, and 0 to 3 Woofer Wailers. Maybe it's their silly name, maybe our kinda customers aren't usually Tube Screamer kinda people, maybe it doesn't sound as good as you and I think it does *wink*, I don't know... but we're only making about 25 more and then that's it for them! And we're ok with that, we're glad our only clone is our worst seller. If I had a time machine I'd go back and not make them at all... and then save John Connor's ass.

We don't make very many pedals in general though, in our 3 years (doors opened August 2006) of selling pedals we've only made around 1700.. labour of love kinda thing I guess... we're happy just making enough to keep our bills paid so we can keep making more.

We'll be sending AG&B another batch in less than 2 weeks and there's a couple more Frazzes going to them. I know I'm biased but I think Frazzes are way way way way cooler. *smile*

Thanks again!

Hm... Sad, I really liked it. :idk: I guess most people either already have an Overdrive, or just use the other channel of their amp. My amp is a single channel though, and I need a good overdrive for it. Can't wait till I go down there and play a Frazz  I better rwrite down J Mascis' settings for that. I bet that the WW sounds great through a Fender, but I wasn't in their store long enough to try it out. I only got to play the WW through the Zinky and quickly tried the ZVEX board they had through a fender. On a different note, on the ZVEX board the Lo-FI Loop Junky was out of batteries, and I was dissapointed by most of the other pedals. I know a lot of people around here are bashing ZVEX because he was being a jerk, but none of his pedals really excited me that much... Though it was kinda funny when I turned on a Fuzz Factory and a little kid by the fender amp I was playing through jumped away and ran to his dad. :erm:

Scaring little kids with guitar pedals, hey? I like that! I've done it too! Tanya's has a 10 year old brother and he scared the hell out of himself once clicking the toggle switch on a Reverberator.. it was set really wet and the amp was really loud and he didn't know it would make the 'splash' sound, ha!

So what's a Zinky like? I've never seen on of them in person.

Zinkys are real fun, nice tone, mellow overdrive. I didn't know about them until wednesday, actually. I saw the Meat Puppets and Curt Kirkwood used this cool Zinky mini half stack ( I mean MINI) And when I was at AG&B I saw a Zinky Blue Velvet combo, plugged in a trusty old strat, and I loved it. Great sound from such a small amp. Kind of expensive though... At least for me...

Man, I wish I was close enough to somewhere where I could demo some Dr. Scientist pedals. But there's no real dealer in Baltimore nor SF. :(
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

It's over 5 and a half hours to get to Analogue Haven from where I live, and that's if traffic is decent!

I've liked the Woofer Wailer's sounds from the very few demos that are out there though.

Cool Blurry, they look like nice amps! And man, 4 hour drive to the store and you didn't even get to try a Frazz.. sorry to hear that!

Nychy, we'd love to have a store in Baltimore or SF... I think we've got a SF store lined up, he's just waiting for us to get caught up with orders so we can take on more stores. We've got about 30 or 40 stores around the world waiting to sell our pedals but we can't keep up with the 20 stores we now work with at all.. we might even have a Baltimore store lined up too. Both Baltimore and SF seem like awesome cities. You ever been to the Ace of Cakes shop in Baltimore? And you've been to Analogue Haven too? AH is maybe our best/favourite store to work with, the owner Shawn is a heckuva guy.

And thanks PP, much appreciated!

Maybe we'll never officially retire the Woofer Wailerl, we'll just only make it for ILF folks.

Never heard of "Ace of Cakes," Ryan. I might just check it out while I'm still here (though I'll be back again in about a month). In the Bay Area, I normally go to "The Starving Musician," which has a lot of great pedals like Empress Effects and now Dwarfcraft Devices. There's been nothing but good things said about AH, but if it wasn't all the way down in SoCal I'd be going down there a lot. I guess the demos will have to do for now.

It's actually Charm City Cakes. Ace of Cakes is a show on the food network.
