I wanna be in a _________ band goddammit!!!!!

Post by chutneyfarmer »

OK folks, this is a thread for all of us lone, ehhh, wolves out there who have nobody to call "bandmates". Here we can discuss the type of bands we so desperately want to be in! Who knows, maybe something will come of it :!!!:

I guess I'll go first.

I really wanna be in a garagey blues-ish kinda band. Like early Jon Spencer Blues Explosion/The Cramps/Guitar Wolf/The Dirtys type stuff. Kinda tight but kinda sloppy at the same time. Scuzzy guitars with pounding drums. Keep things nice and simple and minimal. Stripped down drum kit and guitar setup. Just focus on the rockin. I used to play this kinda stuff waaaaay back in the day and I miss it dearly. Of course I'm nowhere near as good on guitar as I was then as I don't get to play as much these days, and have picked up some bad habits along the way, but I'd fucking love to spend some time working on something like that and putting every last drop of energy into playing gigs.

Here's the Extended Director's Cut version of the story behind all this, just coz thinking about it is making me kinda sad and nostalgic......

About 14 years ago (fucking hell I feel old) I was in a band which did kinda post-rock sorta stuff. Anyway after practices the bass player and myself would often just hang out and jam. This bass player was actually a natural at drumming (which made our actual drummer quite jealous and he hated letting him near his kit) so it would just be guitar and drums in a tiny sweaty garden shed we had insulated. After jamming we would cobble some cash together for some cheap booze and hang out in his house.

One night we were watching an episode of Alternative Nation one of us had taped when Blues explosion came on playing Fuck Shit Up live in the MTV studios. We both creamed ourselves instantly!! This was the exact type of stuff that we had always talked about playing but never could quite put together. We jammed the song the next morning and from there we started jamming and messing around with other similar ideas that never fit in with our other band. We hung out one night and recorded 2 tracks onto his cassette 4 track. One of the songs we managed to capture was actually our very first time playing the song with that particular arrangement which I love the idea of. To this day they are still some of my most favourite recordings I've ever been a part of. Sloppy? Yes. Derivative? Hell yeah! But what we managed to capture was just 2 mates in the exact same musical headspace, having fun sweating and rocking out.

Unfortunately we had to leave that practice space soon after and we kinda no longer had a space where we could jam after band practice so the project kinda fell apart. From there my mate had a horrible run of luck and is unfortunately no longer with us, but every time I hear that kind of music I just wish he was there to jam and rock out with :(

Anyway, lets not end this post in a downbeat mood!!! What kinda bands do you folks desperately want to play in???? Tell me and the rest of ILF!

Well, it looks like I am finally putting together a blackened sludge metal/post rock thing. And I've been wanting to do that shit for ages.

I would love to be in a krautrock band.

I just haven't really seen too many bass/drum black metal bands out there- I think that Ride For Revenge is bass heavy, but not bass exclusive. With Savage Cross I've done quite a few sessions only using bass with great results. It just makes you move around the bass more and think differently about it other than just a rhythm tool. And it builds teamwork. And I can just see having two rhythm oriented instruments could lead to really zony jams too

I second that notion Skullservant...Having played a lot more bass recently, I've been coming up with ways to get that blackened buzz out of my bass and it sounds super cool...I might wanna steal this idea. Hahah.

If you check my soundcloud page some of the new stuff has smatterings of fuzzed out dirty reverb'd bass tremolo picking lines in it that I'd like to expand into something else. Like Om wearing corpse paint. If I could program drums in a way that didn't blow, I'd go for it.

It just makes so much sense. It's a primitive musical form, why not go to the roots and take it back to 4 strings?

 Skully, let's start a band! I suppose I could learn to tele-drum (like tele-surgeon robots that operate on your heart across the internet, but I'd play a drum kit) :animal:

Throw some octave up fuzz in there for a little bit of added tonal dimension...it could be super cool. Maybe TWO basses? Kinda like Horse Latitudes, but more evil.

I wish I had a usb interface of my own to record all this stuff by myself. =/

Also, I've had this idea for ages now...imagine if the Jesus and Mary Chain had a string quartet? I want to make that idea real so bad.

Yeah, currently running my Unpleasant Surprise into my Sovtek for some crazy upper octave stuff. Might be clean to have a polyoctaver before the fuzz thouhg too.

And M-Audio interfaces are seriously less than like $60 for a mono unit!
