Also - do American Apparel shirts run true to size or are they on the small size?

They are slightly on the smaller side but not too off from true. Also depends on how you wash them, a hot wash will will shrink the considerably.

Washing them in general shrinks them significantly, I learned that the hard way. They also keep shrinking until about the 4th wash.
