pickups bro

Post by madmax1012 »

so i've got an American Fender HSS strat with a duncan JB humbucker in the bridge. sounds pretty good. but it's not a motherfuckin P-90. so basically, what are some good humbucker-sized P-90's i can throw in there? also, might consider some decent replacements for the single coils.

and i'm kinda curious what everyone's playing through when it comes to their pickups :thumb:

Phat Cats are okay... the Gibson P94 is pretty good, but its kind of a bit darker than I'd expect a P90 to be, there's also the Bare Knuckle Stockholm, but its fairly high-output so it depends what you're after. If you want classic, there's the Bare Knuckle Mississippi Queen which is literally an actual P90 made to fit inside a humbucker casing... I am kind of bias towards Bare Knuckle but they make some really great stuff :thumb:

for cheap P90esque pickups in a humbucker form factor, people seem to be really happy with the GFS Dream 90/Dream 100 pickups. i know someone who uses them, and they sound fine to me.

for single-coil Strat pickups, i haven't heard anything i like better than the Fender Custom Shop '54 and '68 reissue pickups. but then, i like to use more "traditional" clean Strat sounds and use pedals/amp gain for da dirtz.

ive never had the pleasure, but BG Pure-90s are suppose to be awesome. i think they might be ACTUALY P-90s shaved down to fit into a humbucker case. someone had a set on TGP last week for a good price.

Cheap: gfs mean 90. I've got one in a strat right now, very trashy and bright

'spensive (but worth it): BKP mississipi queen. If you want a firebreather get the pig90 (an MQ wound like a warpig)
