That's pretty much it. You just do it slowly. Thinking of getting my old $30 espresso maker back out. I had to work at getting the best out of it, but I had been able to pull some nice shots with good crema from it. Recommended pre-ground espresso-ground coffee of an appropriate roast? Last I remembered using was Illy, which was pretty good but pricey

Except I usually get light roasts.

Also:
I just drank two cups of coffee, about 45 minutes ago.
I guess I'm about to see if it affects my ability to go to sleep.

I'm a barista, and the cafe I work at is super slow, so I drink a lot of coffee. Counter Culture Nueva Llusta is my jam right now, at least until we get more Rustico back in stock.
