poly-grace settings thread!

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

this will be a very useful thread, i think. these settings were all done on my protoype poly-grace which does not have a fully functioning VOLTS control (missing the 15V setting) so there are a good number of tones i'm missing at the moment...

each different sound will get it's own post and name so it may be easier to search for them (?)
i'll also try and point out any quirks on the different settings as well.
please post settings in o'clock format - 7 o'clock being fully counterclockwise, 5 o'clock being fully clockwise

controls will be laid out like this:
FUZZ VOL
FEEDBACK
STARVE
WAVE - waveform rotary, 1 (up), 2 (up/right), 3 (down/right), 4 (right)
FB MODE (I, II, III, IV)
VOLTS
TOGGLE
FUZZ SW (stompswitch on/off)

basic

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

this is a super basic setting that bypasses the IC heart and goes straight to the output stage. it can be cool for stacking with other pedals before it... one caveat is that if you switch the pedal on with the toggle one way, then turn it off, switch the toggle the other way and turn it back on, the toggle will work the opposite way... weird. and confusing. sorry.

the TOGGLE will go between a cleanish jangle or a super gated crackle and VOLTS will change the sound/output slightly.

FUZZ VOL, n/a
FEEDBACK, n/a
STARVE, n/a
WAVE , 1
FB MODE , n/a
VOLTS, 9V or 15V
TOGGLE, on or off
FUZZ SW, off

phasey decay fuzz

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

fuzz with a cool slightly phased decay. FUZZ VOLUME and VOLTS both affect the decay and fuzz characteristics.

FUZZ VOL, 12-5
FEEDBACK, n/a
STARVE, 5
WAVE , 1
FB MODE , 1
VOLTS, 0V
TOGGLE, on
FUZZ SW, on

bright jangle

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

this is a really bright treble boost-type setting which has some intense white noise at certain settings. it's really bright. super. bright.
STARVE, VOLTS and TOGGLE all affect the density/character of the noise and the quality of the jangle.

FUZZ VOL, n/a
FEEDBACK, n/a
STARVE, any
WAVE , 2
FB MODE , 1
VOLTS, any
TOGGLE, on or off

crackle blown amp

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

this setting is reminiscent of some of the sounds you can get in a fuck overdrive using the crackle switch. FEEDBACK and STARVE both control the breakup and fuzziness.

FUZZ VOL, n/a
FEEDBACK, any
STARVE, any
WAVE , 2
FB MODE , III
VOLTS, 9V or 15V
TOGGLE, on
FUZZ SW, off

oscillations

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

this setting can be LOUD. oscillator madness here with some straightforward oscillator stuff as well as some really cool just-about-to-oscillate on-the-edge ghost-type sounds. FUZZ VOL controls the tracking, FEEDBACK controls the gating of the oscillation, STARVE controls the pitch and to some degree the gating of the oscillation, VOLTS controls the harmonic content.

FUZZ VOL, mostly between 7 and 12
FEEDBACK, sweet spot is near the top of the travel
STARVE, sweet spot is near the top of the travel
WAVE , (either 1 or 2 - i think 2 but i can't read what i wrote... lol)
FB MODE , II
VOLTS, 6V or 0V
TOGGLE, off
FUZZ SW, on

octave down weirdness

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

some intense octave down and beyond here. with the FUZZ off it becomes an intensely hissy white noise machine and with the FUZZ on it gets an over-saturated fuzz with odd amplitude swelling. FUZZ VOL will control the tracking mostly and STARVE, TOGGLE and VOLTS all do *something* but i neglected to write down what...

FUZZ VOL, there's a sweet "cutoff" point - you'll hear it.
FEEDBACK, n/a
STARVE, any
WAVE , 3
FB MODE , I
VOLTS, 6V mostly
TOGGLE, on or off
FUZZ SW, off or on

dark doom fuzz

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

this is a super massive heavy and DARK doom fuzz. FEEDBACK acts like a lowpass filter with STARVE and FUZZ VOL both controlling the fuzz density/thickness.

FUZZ VOL, from around 10 to 5
FEEDBACK, any
STARVE, any
WAVE , 3
FB MODE , III
VOLTS, 9V or 15V
TOGGLE, off
FUZZ SW, on

dark compressed fuzz

Post by smallsnd/bigsnd »

a cool "sucking" kind of compressed fuzz which can get nice and dark. FEEDBACK controls the compression, STARVE controls the noise and compression to some degree and TOGGLE switches between a dark or bright setting.

FUZZ VOL, n/a
FEEDBACK, any
STARVE, any
WAVE , 3
FB MODE , IV
VOLTS, 6V / 9V / 15V
TOGGLE, on or off
FUZZ SW, off

Brian, did you ever get a chance to test the Poly-Grace with a PP2+ or similar power supply?

yeah i'm *pretty* positive i tested the prototype with a PP2+ and it was fine, though i KNOW i tested it with the PP2+ on it's own... i just can't remember if i had any other pedals plugged in as well. basically, the power just needs to be isolated from other effects - so a standalone supply or the isolated output on the PP2+ should be good to go.

also, the supply ONLY needs to be isolated if the toggle switch is in the RIGHT (or ON) position (since it changes ground's reference). otherwise you can run it on a regular chain (that toggle just won't work is all - the LED won't light up)
