lol. was going to say i have no idea who that is, because i am SO ignorant of musicians, but you helpfully posted an INFOGRAPHIC. you are doing Sheba's work.

i don't really miss the low B at all, really wanting to be able to go to C on this. i'm having a setup done on my Dinger in a few weeks, i'm kinnnnnnnda wanting to go with a 7 string bass tuning without the B. i've always used Dingwall nickels, have been told to stay with strings designed for a fanned fret setup. they do sell a F# for tuning a 5th below B, but no high F.

murf. lol. since i'm not competent enough to do setups myself, don't know if i really want to go banana pants on my favorite bass.

I get where you are coming from on that tuning for a 6, I really don’t use the B on my 7 string as much as the rest, kalium makes a set with gauges “Close” to a dingwall set with a high f https://kaliummusic.com/product/string- ... 43c3j3p60/ but I’d check with them if they would work on you bass lengthwise before buying… and you’d have to re-intonate the bass more than likely

for a true Duck Dunn sound you have to start with flats and then never change them unless one breaks...when Guitar Player interviewed him in the 70s he said he'd had the same strings on since 1959 until one broke recently. i don't understand how you could play a set for 15 or 20 years without the winding wearing through, but that's just me.

:idk: I normally don't leave strings on for decades.. but on my 74 P, I think the strings have been on there since the mid 90s... wasn't intended.. just every time I'd get a spare set, id need them for my other bass or something.. strings are deadish.. but structurally fine.. still sounds good...

I've had a set on for ten years and they were still totally fine, no sign of going weird, so I can see it. Obviously sounded pretty dead, which is no bad thing for me. I'm with the leave 'em forever crew. I did change them recently though when I got my bass set up by a tech :animal: :idk:

 :idk: I think you are a bit fogeyer or about the same as me :p I think it has more to do with what grabbed you when you first started learning.. and while I was getting into metal, weird, noisy at the same times as starting playing the first song I actually learned was Exodus by Bob Marley, that reggae sound has always my zero point even when I go chasing bright stuff i always want some of the bigwarmheft in there :animal:

i come from Jack Casady and Phil Lesh, so i'm all about 15" speakers that go WHUMMMMMMMMMM. my JBL D140F arrives today, and i'm a happy kitty. the bass and head already sound great through my Weber D120 clone, and the 15" should be heavenly.

they lied. the speaker didn't get here till this afternoon. it took a little while to install because the cab's threaded mounting studs used aluminum combination hex nut/lock washer dealies some of which were worn and difficult to screw down. i had to move 2 or 3 of them from one stud to another before they all could be tightened. there were a couple of tense moments. i appreciate that they wanted to use hardware that wouldn't get sucked into the speaker innards, but maybe something stronger than aluminum? brass, maybe? not that the folks at Unicord in 1972 are taking suggestions.

so i wired it up and it sounds lovely. huge round low notes with zero distortion and only the coloration of the speaker which is really pretty in the mids and upper mids. i love playing the open A string and listening to it bloom and decay. i'll still need some time to get things really dialed in, but so far i'm as happy as could be. next bass acquisition will be a second D140F cabinet so i can run a 4-ohm load, get 200W output, and hopefully not blow up the speakers which are rated at 85 watts apiece. the likelihood of me winding the stack up high enough to actually use 200 watts is fairly remote...with one 15" it's almost too loud for the apartment with the gain on 3 and master volume half up. with two i think i could probably play clubs. i don't have to do wiring wizardry either because the B2R has dual speaker outs. and the roundwounds are working to give me a sound that's articulate without being modern and treble-happy. i think things are going well.

once my overall amplifier situation is sorted i'm going to start collecting iconic 12" and 15" speakers that i can use as cabinets for everything. i think i'd like an EV and a Hartke for bass and absolutely a Fane for guitar. i also had a 2x12 cabinet with modern ceramic Jensens that was very Fendery when i ran the Electar Tube 10 (one 12AX7, one 6V6/6L6) through it. aw, jeez, now i'm going to have to make up a speakers list, aren't i? actually, i probably did one in my projects lists c.2020.

if the Univox cabinet works out well for bass i'll just get a second one...there's a fair number of them rattling around in the used gear market and i like their dimensions better than the ported 1x15" bass cubes on eBay. though i kind of doubt that the UB250 is an optimal sealed enclosure i'm quite sure it's better than an 20" ported cube.

i'll also get a collapsible wheeled cart at some point to move stuff around if i start playing out in the world. the bass modules aren't too bad though the B2R struck me as heavy for its size, but if you add a guitar amp and extension speaker, the three pedalboards, instruments, and ancillary gear it's a cargo bay full of backaches. my main board is heavy enough to be a combo amp, and its ATA-style case doesn't help.

I like the idea!
I used a single mesa 1x15 for few years but was one of their lightweight cabs and it would breakup a little on lower notes at loud volumes [again my amps since 2008 has been a mesa 400+ or a SWR grand prix with a crown power amp depending on the gig], I sold that and got a Peavey 1516 1x15 & 2x8, great cab.. only thing I didn't like was dumb... sound.... guys.. would try and mic one of the 8s.. :picard: Currently I'm rocking a H&K 2x15, it is awesome! with my trusty SWR big ben 1x18 that I've had since I was 15 for when needing moreness

i was momentarily tempted by an 18" speaker, but then i thought about how heavy the magnet in one of those suckers would be. if i was playing somewhere bigger than a bar i'd have to think of it just on sonic transportation terms.

i spent some time web-crawling and number-crunching and the UB250 cabinet is 2.66 cubic feet. JBL's kit recommendations in the 70s were at least 3.5 cubic feet, and Phil's 1x15" WoS bass cabs were a whopping 25.5 x 19.5 x 29.5” or 8.5 cubic feet. yes, they were deeper than they were tall. well, that's obviously out of the question...it would be like having the Monolith from 2001 in my living room. i don't think that the lesser volume of the UB250 will be a problem at the moderate volume levels i anticipate. and if things do get weird i can just put a port in it or take the back off though i prefer sealed cabinets for everything. it's made of 1.125" MDF other than the back panel and the wooden baffle, so i think it should hold up OK. that's actually thicker than i expected. everything seems solid so far. now i need to work on optimizing the Mustang Bass and the amp settings. nobody complained about the guy in the next apartment blaring movies through his subwoofer so loud that i could hear it in my bedroom for years, so nobody better bug me about the bass.

BTW it was extremely difficult to get D140F specs. this was before the days of Thiele-Small parameters and the sales sheets, as all sales sheets do, had a minimum of information. most of what i got was from various forum posts.
