The very early model A/DA Final Phase were optical too.

But not the reissue? :idk: :snax:

Not to my knowledge at least, it became a CMOS switched resistor design at some point in its original run and I'm 99.999999% certain that's the case for the reissue too.

Personally, I'd say switched resistor is just as good as optical.

Ah, thanks :zen: - I have the reissue; it does sound pretty pretty nice, and I'm not sure what optocouplers would improve? Besides the 10 stages and grit, the ability to "modulate the modulator" is its big selling point for me.

Univibes were LDR, while later copies are mostly optocoupler-type, right? Are you on the hunt for asymmetry, Chank? :snax:

Optocouplers are usually good cause they've got high headroom/low noise compared to J-FET's, CMOS Inverters or OTA's. The switched resistor offers that too, just isn't used very often as it requires more complex circuitry, consideration & circuit board space (but much cheaper and more consistent if you're the builder/designer).

The only other difference of concern is response speed, opto's kinda naturally soften at higher speeds as they can't react quick enough so get a bit bubbly sounding... that could be a positive or negative depending on your outlook.

All things being equal, they're comparable and that's why the design was changed.

Interesting - thanks - I had no idea, really, but I can see why some might prefer/not prefer optos now :thumb:

Again, I've got no issue with the re-ish - especially since I got it crazy cheap on some kind've closeout. I wonder how Chankgeez'd like it :snax:

To me, the effect of the high number of stages is more audible than any I suspect I would register any difference in circuit components....

Thanks Scruffie & Dandolin!

I tend to clip JFET phasers even with the low-output pickups I usually use because I like running fuzz before phaser. Wanting a phaser to stand up to that.

Asymmetry is nice, but what I really wanna hear is a phaser that sounds close to an Ibanez FP-777 Flying Pan with some more modern functionality. :D :snax:

Besides having 10 stages, the Final Phase is a pretty unique design in that it uses high Q factor all pass filters, something I don't think I've ever seen elsewhere so the peaks and notches are sharper, more like you'd get from a flanger which gives it that vocal quality.

I think we should make Chankgeez try one :poke:

(also, i agree that the Final Phase gets closer to a flange quality than most any other phaser i've heard (might wanna throw the Ghost Fax and that Duncan jawn in that shootout too))

Sweetwater's got the same deal this month with a $25 gift card included.

Bagged one, should be here in a day or two.
