Stumbled across this place a while ago googling some odds and ends, but decided to make an account about 6 months ago and over time I am finding I am spending my superfluous internet time here more than anywhere else and I'm getting more and more engaged with the discussions and personalities here...so why not make an intro post?
I'm a musician who happens to also be a bassist. Seems like many folks into the weird and wild are bass players...any correlation there? I started playing bass in 92 when I was 13 (math wizes, yep...I turn 41 within the month), I picked up the bass because my group of friends and I were planning to form a band to take over the world and I was the slowest to save money to buy a guitar so I decided why not play the bass...afterall, Metallica was my king when I was 13 and Cliff Burton was a hero of mine at the time.
I was instantly in 3 different bands when I got to high school cause there was me and one other person in town who played bass. Played lots of cover songs, occasional originals and sparse gigging, mostly variety shows and pep rally type things...then off to college where I discovered the wonders of psychedelics (among other things that we will leave off the internet

), Played in a hippie jam band in upstate new york (Binghamton area) where we got to open for Max Creek and Liz Phair and in general would play parties and small bars...after college, spent about a decade in and out of bands - always focusing on original music with the scattered tasty cover sprinkled in here and there. Main gig was a band in NYC called "asterisk" [http://www.asteriskband.com] - we played the CBGB style club circuit and snagged a few decent opening spots by having good relationships with places like the Lion's Den and those promoters. Got to open for Oteil and the Peacemakers!!!
Had my first kid and moved to the suburbs all within the same year and that caused me to fizzle out on music for a good 6-8 years or so before getting back into it in a big way about a year ago. I've always been into the weird and unusual and would crowbar loops and theramins into gigs with asterisk and other bands/jams (usually to the chagrin of the drummer and other bandmates), but things have jumped leaps and bounds since I stopped paying attention so really loving getting caught up...and naturally this place is feels more like home than almost anywhere else on the internet - the we won't mod you, but don't be a d*ck vibe is just right for me and the personalities that shine through on this site are highly relate-able to me and most of you already feel like long time friends just reading the banter back and forth.
I have a LOT of passion and I put my all into whatever has my attention, so I expect to gradually be more and more involved here as it seems more my speed and the subject matter and knowledge here far exceeds anywhere else I've stumbled across on the www. Hoping I don't rub folks the wrong way or butt heads with some as I can be opinionated, but I TRY to be open minded and own when I'm in the wrong. In any event, looking forward to hanging here more and building relationships and becoming a part of what makes this community excellent. Thanks for keeping a space like this around and thanks for motivating me with all of the work that you all share.
