Re: “Other” guitars ...
So, I found an old violin body when I was cleaning out a foreclosed trailer, and I remembered a PG article about a guy turning one into a guitar. I'm thinking of making it a banjola with a lipstick pickup. Thoughts?

Yeaah baby--love the sound of those--boxy in a good way--they mix nicely with other string sonorities, though the one I played wasn't very loud--I'm sure that varies from maker to maker and guitar to guitar....

Did the one you played come off as physically delicate?Dandolin wrote:Yeaah baby--love the sound of those--boxy in a good way--they mix nicely with other string sonorities, though the one I played wasn't very loud--I'm sure that varies from maker to maker and guitar to guitar....

Re: “Other” guitars ...
Not moreso than a good classical guitar, which will be really light, but not fragile. The biggest drawback of many of these "ancient" instruments is the tuners which are a full-on pita. That Roosebeck, well, you could upgrade the pegs to a newer stealth geared type like they use for violins, or similar banjo tuners, but they ain't cheap, especially not for 10 of 'em, and may need specialist installation. I' m assuming those aren't geared pegs on their already--be surprised if they are....
Here's the violin type I'm referring to:

The lute-guitar has geared pegs ... that interests me too but I wonder if it’s not just a novelty, like f-holes painted on an electric ...Dandolin wrote:Not moreso than a good classical guitar, which will be really light, but not fragile. Re: “Other” guitars ...
Yeah, I had a lute guitar that eventually developed problems [ok, exploded] and it was like 90 years old and not very good to begin with, but before it died I definitely felt like it was kind of a big mistake. Sound was not charmingly boxy, just a bit small and dull, and it was awkward to hold and not a great player. I really wanted a lute, I should have gotten a lute. If I were going back to that now, I'd hit the baroque guitar--double courses and the smaller body, with the soft frets add up to a unique sound and feel without wrestling an instrument that wants to slide out of your lap and under a log in the pond.
Or just go crazy and get a theorbo.

Interesting, I figure you can get much nicer trad classical guitar for the cost of a lute-guitar ...Dandolin wrote:Yeah, I had a lute guitar that eventually developed problems [ok, exploded] and it was like 90 years old and not very good to begin with, but before it died I definitely felt like it was kind of a big mistake.
