I ended up watching this local group's first gig and really liked the vibe... I don't know much about jazz so sorry if it's bunk

Ha well cool. The title track and orchard of pomegranates are my favorites. Love the vocals and sax.

I combed the thread before I posted but just in case, sorry if I missed this. The only reason I know of this is from the movie BROKEN FLOWERS.

Re: Just Jazz!
^^all of his stuff is the bomb. Somewhere I've got another full disc's worth--I'll try to post a link!
Ooops, nvm--it's Ethiopiques vol. 4--but there's a lot of overlap with this comp.
There are a lot of cool volumes in the Ethiopiques series, but the range is really wide, from spare, "folksy" a capella things, to more urban fusions like Mulatu's stuff. He is the acme afaic, but I think it's worth checking out some of the other Ethiopian stuff from that period. It's a pretty fascinating and inspiring story the way all this rich music exploded in such a brief period out of a crack in a state-controlled medium....
Anyway--came to post something a little different; maybe not worlds away, though.
For me, supper is over; thanks have been given; the thanking continues...phew!

Pharaoh Sanders--Elevation
Chank, that Grachan is desert island; the Fats is unimpeachable, of course; the Shreveport Sizzlers is an awesome find, I've not heard it before, and I've done a lot of digging in that era, and never ran across it (and had no idea it was a Clarence Williams project (no wonder I liked it))...also the full A/B title of that side is very early Sun Ra: "You've Got To Be Modernistic/Nervous Breakdown."
Thank you Clarence (you know you done good when both Louis and the Duke cover you):

Good stuff, gentlemens.
Yeah, Mulatu on vol. 4 of the Éthiopiques is the best.
This one may be the most jazziest otherwise though:
