I'm not hardcore on this stuff, but from watching when this stuff was aired I thought that DS9 had more compelling writing. (Maybe because more of it was urgently "about" something--the Bosnian genocide allegories were pretty striking.) Holding that premise, I'm ready to agree that the TNG characters are stronger.MechaGodzilla wrote:Maybe I'm just in too deep but I'm now fully on the side of "fucking love" DS9. Re: The Netflix Thread
Yeah TNG is like Parks and Rec in space (as in you're watching a big happy family on screen and just enjoy seeing them in their day-to-day life) but I definitely get how DS9 is more "concept". I'm on season 4 and you can really see how Ronald D. Moore (& co. ?) carried the theme of mistrust and paranoia into the BSG reboot which I loved a lot. DS9 has the changelings and BSG had cylons.Gone Fission wrote:I'm not hardcore on this stuff, but from watching when this stuff was aired I thought that DS9 had more compelling writing. Shoutout to people who's SO puts on a shitty film only to fall asleep 2/3 of the way through, so you think "I may as well see where this goes" and it's just shit.

Re: The Netflix Thread
Finally stopped putting off watching Cemetery Of Splendour. Just as excellent as I hoped it would be, easily a new favorite. Even though the director did not say it was a part of his previous trilogy, and it is not marketed as a sequel, I think it works very well as companion piece to Uncle Boonmee. Highly recommended for people into South Eastern Asian cinema (looking at you Pope
) or for folks into meditative movies that aren't really 'about anything' and don't really 'go anywhere'. I recommend watching 'Boonmee' as well either before or after this movie. We can compare notes.

Started watching Mindhunter. I like the mood and pacing a lot. I'm only halfway through the season, but it's very promising!

Watched Gerald's Game. It was good. There were some elements that were overdone, like the eclipse. But, some moments, like Gerald's description of death, were golden.
We, also, finished Big Mouth. What a hilarious show! Figures crossed for a season 2.

Deep Space 9 is awesome, the overall content of the show works better than TNG (multi-episode story arcs don't feel forced) but TNG will always have a special place in my heart. That said Garik, Quark and Odo are some top notch Star Trek characters and Riker is a cockbag so I'm somewhat conflicted. Voyager and Enterprise were disappointing, I did not care for them at all.
The new Star Trek shows looks really good, I just need to convince my better half not to leave me if I start watching it.
American Horror Story is dope.
Slightly more controversial, we fell into watching RuPaul's Drag Race and I fucking love it.

Re: The Netflix Thread
I talk too much about Star Trek, so I'm going to barrel past the obligatory essay of opinions I would normally spout on this and just back that Drag Race is great television. At its best it is reality television that is diverse, engaging, funny, tragic, uplifting, cheeky and sincere. Which doesn't seem like it could be and not be a total mess, but it's great. I get long gaps where I can't watch anything new, because streaming has caught up, but it's binge television in our house, when it's available.Dapper Bandit wrote:Deep Space 9 is awesome, the overall content of the show works better than TNG (multi-episode story arcs don't feel forced) but TNG will always have a special place in my heart. Re: The Netflix Thread
It's really got everything, the drama that you expect with reality TV but then it's all backed up with massive amounts of artistry and talent. Whenever there is a lull in the listings or a big gap between new shows we'll rewatch pretty much every season and inevitably go hunting around youtube for season 1 afterwards. Pretty annoying that Allstars isn't on the 'Flix but we managed to watch some crappy youtube rips at least.
At the risk of nerding out, the line-up of AllStars 3 is being announced Friday and I am keen as beans for it.

I just read up on the last season of Halt and Catch Fire and I'm terrified for when I'm finally able to watch it on Netflix.
Since I always forget:

I watched It Might Get Loud last night. Loved it! I never thought I'd find The Edge interesting...

Re: The Netflix Thread
agreed. Quite compelling TV that you only have to half pay attention to, which is a real niche in my life.
