Scratch that, I forgot I had this gem from 2014 listening to this on the bike tonight.

Do y'all run with music? So far I haven't been but I'm thinking about getting an arm holder for my phone so I can track miles, and if I'm bringing my phone I might as well listen to music...

I'm trying to train for a half marathon in October. Shouldn't be terrible but I haven't excercised regularly in many years, so we're starting from a really bad place.

Peteebee, I personally don't run with music. Part of the fun for me is to be outside and sort of just deal with myself. Same can be said about swimming laps. I like the isolation and introspective component that comes with it. I run on roads too so it's also a safety thing for me. Music is absolutely essential on my stationary bike though. Good luck with your training!

Did 3 miles today. Going to hit the bike for an hour.

What is everyone's diet like for running? I tend to favor running on an empty stomach. I also do a lot of intermittent fasting so it all works out. Tried going paleo a few times but I just don't see a problem with brown rice or steel cut oats especially if you are very active. I'm not dead set on this, diet, like science, is good until further notice.

Random thought, I really want to take up free diving.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to listen to anything. Half hour of quiet seems good for me. And I like having nothing to distract me from dealing with overcoming myself, ya know?

I have to run hungry, or close to it. If I've eaten recently I have the worst time. I haven't done any specific dieting other than what I'm already doing, normal stuff like trying to eat almost vegetarian.

Diet wise, I'm really thorough when it comes to running - basically because there are large scale studies done showing that you fuck up your performance when you don't have enough carbs in your body, and you burn less fat and repair less muscle fiber if you don't eat correctly afterwards (within 30 minutes of exercising).

For morning runs I'll prepare a smoothie the night before with 100g of qvark, 2 peach halves, 1 dl of milk and 1 dl of the juice that the peach halves were in. Drink that then get my shit together, then I'll go for a run, then come back and eat breakfast. I use the same smoothie as a recovery drink if I'm not training before having a meal.

What's breakfast for you?

Earlier this year I was really into getting up early, getting for a long run (6-8 miles is long for me) in and doing a kale shake afterwards (per the oh so beautiful Dr. Rhonda). I should probably do Kale shakes again cause they're just good for you. Not wild about waking up early cause I don't have to for work. I actually prefer to run in extremes. So in the winter I would get up early to go in the cold. Now (since I work virtually) I want to run at like 01:00 PM for the high point.

Also, just got back from 4 mile walk. No music.

Goroth, if you outline your diet I would be thrilled to try it. I've never had an issue with body fat (don't think I've ever exceeded 12% in my life). I am interested in the recovery aspect though.

I just want to say that the 3:2 ratio made my running more enjoyable! Less coughing and longer distances without stopping.

Music is a must for me, too many noise from street, cars, kids. Ambient and easy-listening music is of course what works best. I use a Sansa Clip for this.

I've never run with music and I don't intend to. Like being alone with my thoughts on quiet runs and near cars I don't think I would feel as safe with headphones on. I record my runs with a GPS watch.

Eating for me depends what I'm doing. Anything up to about 10 miles if I don't care about the time I'll probably just wake up, drink coffee and go. But for running races, hard runs out just trying to train properly I eat breakfast about 1.5 hours before the run. Anything closer and I feel sick, though I can stomach a banana or energy bar just before a race. My breakfast can be anything from cereal to leftover food from the night before, I'm not precious about it as long as there's some carbs. I've done a half marathon on two slices of toast before but I can really feel (and measure) the difference when I feed myself properly.

After I just eat whatever.

Did not go well as expected this morning. Only did 3 miles.

Recovery shake was 3 kale leaves, 3 bananas, 1 cup of blue berries.

I'll do better tomorrow.

So I'm looking to try out that peach shake tomorrow morning. Getting quark isn't available where I am. I'm thinking just subbing plain yogurt? Is here anything special about quark? I had never heard of it.

Quark just has a higher protein count than most other dairy products, it's similar to skyr.

edit: apparently it's not, quark has like 3 times the protein and is a different product all together. Thank you, culinary teacher.

I learned that too yesterday ha-ha. I was like "What the fuck is quark?".

I have hemp protein that I use (not lately). It tastes like if my lawn took a shit.
