LP Trad 2014 for a Kramer 450G 70s

Howdy Fuzzers!

I've gotten the opportunity to trade my Gibson Les Paul Traditional 2014 for a Kramer 450G 1970~s and I know barely anything about the guitar.

Reason I am interested is because most of my influences all play alu-necks. Stephen O'Malley, King Buzzo and I Nick from bongripper recently started using a EGC.
Currently I tune in drop F on my gibson, which works, but Im looking to improve that tuning.

Whats your guys imputs?

Never been a LP fan, so I would much rather have the Kramer.

But since you're tuning to drop F, have you concidered switching to a baritone guitar?

I'd much rather have the Kramer, but I'm also not a huge LP fan. As far as baritones go, if you have a fender style guitar laying around you could always get a conversion neck? It tends to be cheaper than buying a new guitar.

I used to have that Hagstrom Bari. Awesome guitar. Used it for doom and twangy rock'n'roll. But some dicks broke in to our van and stole it.

Squier is releasing a pretty sweet looking Baritone Jazzmaster soon. 30 inch scale. Should work well with drop-F.

In the States the LP Traditional would be worth way more than the 450g. I wouldn't do that trade unless it was 450g + $$ for the LP. A really nice Kramer DMZ might be closer in value to an LP Traditional.

So... You've never tried a hollow body for that kind of sound? You've missed out...

Not to hijack the thread but are the Kramer guitars as good - or hold up well - as the EGC stuff? Are the Kramer aluminum necks as thin as the EGC stuff?

The EGC stuff that I've played has all been higher quality than the Kramer stuff that I've played. That being said, the Kramer stuff has all been cool and has played well and sounded good. The EGC stuff is just on another level in my experience.

Thicker necks on the Kramers in general, to answer your second question. The Kramer necks that I've played have all been really comfortable.

Make sure you can plug in the Kramer and play it loud with gain first. The pickups in those early models can have serious problems with microphonics such that you wouldn't even be able to play the guitar without it squealing constantly. The pickup mounting and oversized housings also make it tough to just drop in a replacement pickup. This isn't a problem with the DMZs. Also, make sure the particular example you're looking at doesn't have the post nut arrangement. You might have trouble with heavy strings if it does. Overall though I would never consider a 25" scale guitar for drop F. I'm barely happy with G at 27" with an .080 on the G. For F you really really need a longer scale instrument for decent intonation and clarity. Now if looks are more important than clarity then go for it. But also keep in mind that a cast neck bolted onto a wood body is way different than a billet neck through instrument tonally.

While I agree it's much more of a bridge placement thing than a scale length thing my sheraton II in B standard better than some longer scale guitars but it has the old badass type bridge they did in the early 90's which has twice the amount of adjustment as a tune-o-magic does so it can be made to work
