Brandywine I have some Muffs that aren't getting much love recently, if you're looking for that sort of circuit?

Also, one of my projects for this summer involves doing something similar to that modded blackfly, but DIY with a (nicer) piezo.
good deals are here.

hey dude I know I asked you about this before, but what makes a good piezo? I've been looking for a resonant metal case to make something similar, so I'm pretty curious about the difference in quality.

Beyond the usual component stuff (better parts = better piezo, go figure), from what I've read (which dovetails nicely with my experience) a lot of the 'problems' with piezo pickups have to do with their natural impedance and subsequently the preamp you use: because piezos desperately need a much higher impedance signal than they'll get with a normal mic pre, which is why you'll see some on the cheap solutions sound like shit -- you're amplifying a wonky signal with a weird EQ curve that has, most notably, a massive loss in low end.

That can seem cool in theory, but it usually sounds awful in practice. One solution is to keep an eye out for a really nice preamp: UG and I both use the Barcus-Berry 4000, and those show up on the relative cheap sometimes on Reverb and the 'bay, etc.: I got mine from a church in Chicago or something for about half the price of new, but you can also make your own/have someone build you one just as easily.

Here are a couple of cool DIY solutions that I've seen on that front (there's also more in-depth explanation about what makes a good piezo pre in there)

Are you gonna do some "magfly modifications"?

Yes, but... no

He did inspire me, but I'm going to take it in another direction, I think.

Picked up a beat up EHX Small Clone in Liverpool on our UK tour last week. Did the vibrato-mod(clipped the R18-resistor). Sounds good, need to replace the depth-switch with a pot. Had one as a teenager as well, being a Kurt Cobain-fanatic off course. ;)

Be honest, was it worth the price? I'm actually curious.

Also does it do that weird noise like in the demo or was that just some kind of mic feedback or something?

Sure, i really wanted one and wound up paying far less than I anticipated. At its original retail price of what, 200-250 it would have been an incredible deal. I've only had a couple minutes with sound running through it and am very very excited with what I heard it doing.

Weird noises? I'm not sure, i read you guys mentioning it maybe being broke but thought you were just joking. I didnt watch that demo, and I'm on my iPad right now and can't watch YouTube clips on it so i dunno. If you listen to that clip I posted I pretty much went through the full range of each knob and the toggles, that was just youtube clip line out of computer into anti into interface. I didn't notice anything weird beyond what I figure it is supposed to sound like. Sounds really really great to me. The wet/dry knob and pre/post gain are awesome and i can already tell they are going to be very useful towards getting different textures etc. But, I havnt hooked it up to an instrument yet, just that quick clip I recorded playing a song through it to make sure it worked.
