I currently play a '84 Sonex Deluxe. They are what replaced the Marauder's. Same bodies essentially. Be prepared to wear a back brace while you play. They are heaver than the average les pauls. It's essentially solid ply wood with a laminate like coating over it. Just typing this out I can literally feel a pain in my back.
However, there are positives! First off it's a goofy Gibson and I love odd Gibsons. Secondly I love how it plays. Again I'm going off of the the Sonex but I would say they are pretty damn close. They action is great, the tone rivals my Les Paul. The most important thing is price. I picked my Sonex up for $300 from a local shop I frequent. Knowing I love backseat Gibsons, I was the first guy he showed when he got it and I picked it up right then after playing it.
In all honesty these guitars are worth about half of what they normally go for and if you can away with a price like I did I would definitely say go for it.

Marauders are actual wood, unlike the sonex. And you need one.

the Marauder, S1, and L6S. the unloved step children of gibson's lost era.
marauder and S1 had bolt on necks, the L6s had set neck and 24 frets.
of coarse i love these things.

....
marauder and S1 were stepping into fender tone territory and the L6S was like a hot rod les paul with modern upgrades. all had pickups and electronics designed by bill lawerence (sp?). iirc, the marauder had a blend pot instead of a traditional toggle....and all went through various switching types through their production years. the pickups all stayed the same...just the manner switching changed. ithink they all had maple bodies.
i have owned a L6S but never a S1 or Marauder...i was just starting out when i had the L6S but i remember it being a fine guitar. very 70's gibson.
i've been watching out for a good deal on either the marauder or S1 for a couple years now. good deal to me being around 500....i've yet to find it. have been considering just buying both sets of pickups and doing my own lately.
anyway......i dig them from afar.... but i have a feeling i wouldn't really like the neck profile
check this....it looks to have a changed neck pickup....not a big deal and easy to get a proper replacement if needed.

I've been wanting one for a while. Maybe it'll be my next guitar purchase. I am looking for a humbuckered gibby.

i wouldn't know for sure as i've never compared but it does have all the ingredients of being "tele-istic". add to that the fact that bill lawerence (his pickups) wants to make everything sound like a tele.
i think they are still gibson scale.....dunno for sure..
