the "ancillary shit" includes a 4-port expander for the FEB's Voodoo Labs power supply that will allow it to drive everything on there and power a couple of off-board items if desired. i can see the Octave Multiplexer on the front and some kind of delay on the back.

i could see modifying the Esquire with a neck pickup and a toggle that would send the treble pickup to the rotatey switch for splitting and what-not. but that could be coals to Newcastle considering how little i use humbucking neck pickups (mostly for quiet jazz or fuzz). i'll have to hunt around for splittable WRHBs.

If you like the demos and get it, maybe believe that the pickup could be good before swapping it. Haven’t listened to the videos in a while, but they suggested the stock pickup isn’t horrible at all. Fine tuning volume and tone pots, tone cap, 50s vs modern wiring, and treble bleed if one fits, may do all the fine tuning you need.

true. it's just that i've had a bug up my butt about WRHBs due to Jonny Greenwood's frequent use of a 20th-century Starcaster. i wouldn't order a replacement until i could ascertain whether a CuNiFe pickup would be that much of an improvement. i have little doubt that i'd change the pots to 1K because they'd pass more treble.
i'm often surprised by how much i like the normie inexpensive pickups that come in guitars meant to sub for something more desirable. my ur-example of this is the DeArmond 2000 and 2K pickups FMIC tried to use to replace proper Dynasonics in the 00s/10s. the 2Ks are snappy pickups that sit between Dynas and P-90s, and the 2000s are about 89% of a Dyna. but i've never had to replace the pickups in my Epiphones or Squiers. i actually suspect i'd be more likely to swap out pickups from cheap Fenders than Squiers.

So my friend picked up one of those esquires as their first guitar.
I am seriously having to resist the urge to buy them a cunife pickup, even though they currently don’t even have an amp and are playing through headphones. The GAS runs deep.
Even more amusingly, the previous owner tore out the electrics so it’s just volume knob straight to jack, total rock machine that they are using to practice fingerpicking country songs.
In my own news, got a tensor incoming in the mail. Might replace my mood mki, or maybe sit alongside it. The mood hasn’t left my board since it came out, but it’s probably time to change things up for something a little more controllable, although that’s not really how I use the mood, hah.

i'm not entirely jazzed with the Wardenclyffe Mini or the Pigtronix Gloamer on the FEB. the Mini just doesn't seem to want to do what i need, and it's also rather noisy especially with the Pan (non-adjustable reverb) and hi-pass filter on. i need to spend some more time digging into it and trying to work it out/in. i'm having a lot of trouble getting the kind of swells i'm used to from Attack Decay from the Gloamer...the Sensitivity, Compression, and Attack knobs are extremely interactive which makes it kind of unpredictable to dial in the waveform you want. its switchable Decay is also weird and tends to hack off the end of a sustained note brutally. on the positive side, it's very quiet. i'm so tired of thinking about this shit. i don't want to hunt for more weird modulators.

on further exploration, the Wardenclyffe Mini isn’t cutting it. too noisy. i’m going to have to look at the various Generation Loss options, which seem like the only other game in town for VHS sounds, and then decide if i need to keep trying with that.
the Gloamer isn’t perfect, but i think i can make it work. its tendency to cut off the end of a decaying note can be worked around with reverb (and when will i ever not be using that?) and deft coordination. i don’t love it and am willing to look at other alternatives, but it’ll do.

Pretty intrigued by the Sonicware samplers e.g.
https://sonicware.jp/pages/liven-lofi12 ... j4xLnDd9v3
To get back a really basic/simple hardware sampler for doing dumb stuff. Though they do have some irritating features and idk about interface. Turned out complex hardware samplers aren't for me (sorry octatrack) and complex stuff is best done in a computer. But simple things... Maybe I just need to get a digi 2 or another Volca :/

For Volca-ish cheap-and-cheerful samplers that will actually sample in the device, it looks like the Roland Aira P-6 is the hot ticket. But if you’re good with importing, Volca still seems strong.

Oh thanks!!! I hadn't heard of that one but it looks really cool. That may be the perfect level actually, and love the built in mic.

the Wardenclyffe is going back to Oregon. i ordered a Cooper/CB Generation Loss v2 which should work. if not, i’m giving up and just using the other FEB stuff in combinations for degraded tape-ish sounds. positive: it’s my own sound; negative, it’s not the BoC VHS sound of my dreams, which may actually be somewhere in the Gen Loss.
still considering options for a attack/decay pedal. i should try running the EHX Attack Decay in an effects loop off the boards so i could cut it out of the signal path when it’s not in use. i haven’t found anything else that gets the kind of LOOOOOOOOOONG swells the AD can do.

Fingers crossed the gen loss does it!
