Came in the other day: the new EHX Pico Deep Freeze!
For all the people wondering, I did a comparison video with the Superego.
As I supposed, it's a mini Superego! Soundwise it is a bit "stripped down", the Superego sounds way more organic and with more cool Gliss artifacts, but if you need something compact and for less money, Deep Freeze does the job wonderfully.

Great vid! I appreciate this deep comparison as someone who's on the fence with those EHX Picos, but it kinda makes me GAS for my old Superego again....which was always pretty great

you're welcome, and thank you!! The Superego is still a unique pedal to me that does some very cool textures, no other pedal does, and still holds nowadays.
I used to have a Plus too, at some point, but that was too much for my needs. This Pico Freeze is very cool indeed.

Oh that's really interesting, I sometimes wonder about getting a smaller version of the superego because the superego IS kinda special somehow. Adds so much to the freeze, and not much seems to come close to it except things that are massive and expensive. I will definitely check out this video (though the right answer for me is probably keeping the superego)

Yes, keep the Superego! My point getting the Deep Freeze is only for compactness reasons and travel setups.
There was a phase I use to have the Superego Plus too. I like better the Original Superego.
It is smaller less knobs and more intuitive to use. And Superego to my ears sounds better: it has more volume available on tap and is fuller sounding (more mid grind boost, SE Plus is cleaner bit kind of mid scooped).

Excellent demo! Never bought a superego as i would use it too sporadically to justify it, but this nano iteration seems a handy alternative for occasional droning etc.
I'm curious to check out the pico POG from the same EHX series, though there's a good chance i'd be disappointed sound-wise, considering that it shares more or less the same DSP algorithm of the micro/nanoPOG.

this sort of thing could be very useful for loop drones. could you please go into a bit more detail about how the attack/decay behavior of the Deep Freeze differs from the Attack Decay, which i have and love but admittedly has its limitations? and why does it require a double-tap to turn it off?
it's too bad the DF loses the Superego artifacts that i find charming and interesting for textures, but i really don't have room for anything on any of my boards, and proportionately less for something that size. the Superego still strikes me as a tempting alternative for the front-end board in association with the Attack Decay, but that would require dumping the Octave Multiplexer i use for faux bass. i like that it's a drone thing that doesn't follow the usual sound of other drone devices that try to preserve more/too much of the guitar's natural tone and doesn't sound like the ways most people use this kind of concept.
the sequence you played in the Latching Mode section is reminiscent of Sigur Rós, especially the resolution with the last 2 or 3 chords and most noticeable with the Superego. was that deliberate, or something you came up with spontaneously?

Thoughts on Deep Freeze vs Freeze? I never went Super Ego, but something that’s still more might work for me.

I never tried the AttackDecay, so I can't tell the difference, but the effect you have with the Speed/Layer knob on attack instead of decay in the Auto mode sounds like a SlowGear effect.
Double tap to turn off the pedal for few reason: in Auto mode when holding the switch you can hold the last "freezed" note, in the Latch mode instead you tap to freeze the next note, so you need the double tap to bypass. It's like this also on the Superego.

It's a differente texture but the effect is the same as the Superego. Personally I never use the Superego alone, but I combine it with massive delays and reverbs. So the Deep Freeze it's a fine replacement, if I need something more compact and travel friendly.

I had the same when I first got the Superego years ago. I went to a shop tried the Freeze and the SE together, and went for the SE. If set right you can achieve the same sounds as the Freeze. So I suppose you can to the same with the Deep Freeze too (Gliss knob at zero, it's a Freeze effect without portamento/glide effects).

there are some little glitches the Superego does on the demo, particularly at the start of a note, that i find really cool. i like effects that are a bit unpredictable. i still use an Octave Multiplexer rather than a modern octave box for bass lines because it does wacky stuff depending on what i play.

funny you should mention it...i just dug out my 3xfx Fatman which had been stored for years. i thought it was broken, but when i plugged it in everything worked fine. it's hella noisy, though. i need a noise gate to make it work.

I found a KMA Machines Minos Fuzz on the second hand market today!
I had it on the radar long ago, but then went out of production. Since the price was very interesting I decided to get it.
