The Freq Out really doesn’t like to be in front of anything but dirt and more exotic strains don’t get along with it. So it makes sense that it didn’t quite fit.

going back a bit...for some reason this discussion doesn't see the posts before sometime this fall as read so i was reading back and saw this:
Ah yes, all my Fender guitars have hot pickups. J Mascis Squier, Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzy has SD Hot for Jazzmaster, and Tele/Strat have Lace Sensors. Silver Lace Sensor feels the closest in output.
it's enough of a problem across the variety of guitars i have that i use a Mellowtone Hi 5 solely as a level matcher on the FEB. i just got a Animals Pedal Vintage Van Driving is Very Fun which is a combo boost/OD; if it's a keeper it'll go on the main board or Normie board depending on how much i can make it sound like a Distortion+ when it's in angry mode. the quietest ones are the Strat and the Kondor...those odd 60s Guyatone/Kent pickups are frail. loudest is the ES-335, which has been loud as fuck ever since it started opening up in the 1980s. i've adjusted most of them to be within reach of each other, but the really quiet ones won't get that loud even with the pickups so close to the strings that they sound worse. surprisingly, the Duncan Antiquities in the Duo Sonic are quite barky now that i cranked them up. i use the envelope filter as a guide...if a loud note doesn't open up the filter that guitar needs a boost. i need similar levels from guitar to guitar for looping in particular.

Felt like moving away from the analog/digital mix of pedalboard elements, towards another paradigm... more electro/acoustic. I'm missing some bits, but it's taking shape:

Image

Not gonna lie, it's a real struggle but I'm enjoying the challenge. In other words, I'm shit but it's fun!
Also, it takes a lot of room in front of me and limits the number of pedals I can position on the board or hit with my feet.
I'm thinking about building a small stool on wheels, maybe something I can store cables in like that.

I have different beaters and a Roland SPD One Kick on the way to add a kick drum sound... And more complexity!

i put the Vintage Van Driving Is Very Fun on the Normie Board. it's a harmonically richer sound than the Marshall Guv'nor Plus (which for some reason i always call Guv'nor II) and goes lower gain than the Höfner Fuzz so i put it in the Quiet Dirt Position. the trio of VV/HF/Danelectro 3699 goes really well together. they all have similar grain and good tone controls which help a LOT dialing things in. the gain ranges also overlap nicely; the HF starts with a dense OD sound and gets quite aggressive with the gain all the way up. the 3699 might get replaced by a HAXAN i'm waiting on Jero for. i have to see if it's a better fit and less noisy. the 3699 is hissy as hell with the gain above 30%; as you can see i have the gain and tone both pretty low.

TC Polytune v1->EMMA Discumbobulator v1 envelope filter->Animals Pedal Vintage Van Driving Is Very Fun->Höfner Fuzz->Danelectro 3699->Empress Nebulus multi-modulation->Fender MTG Tube Tremolo->EQD Ghost Echo v2 reverb.

for now i can drive an auxiliary boxes off the tuner's DC out port, but i want to get a 4-slot Cioks power supply expander so i can run multiple ancillary devices. that would allow me to add delay, wah, and/or stunt reverb to the pared-down setup. i need to find the Cioks DC cable with the EHX Black Finger-style connector.

normie board 1-13-25.jpg
thinking about adding the Instant Lo-Fi Junky to the FEB...it was on early versions but i decided i didn't like the compression, but now i'm thinking it might add color to the more destroyed lo-fi reverbs.

they had 5 different Animals overdrives at the local Music & Arts which is one of two guitar emporia here now so i went in and tested them live. it was the first time i'd tested pedals in a shop since i left California in 2012. i had to kind of extrapolate...since the elevator in my building is out till June i couldn't bring an amp/guitar and even though they had a Princeton Reverb and Les Paul they didn't sound anything much like my gear. so i had to do mental math. it was really weird. i'm glad i found the VV, though.

it'd be nice if the Nebulus did phaser as well as chorus/flanger/vibe/rotary, but it's OK because phaser is my least-used modulation.

It is, I’m pretty happy with it. I have to say though running parallel with another filter takes you to Bootsy land, it really is what makes “that” sound

the Mutron is "that" Bootsy sound you mean, or running another filter parallel with it is "that" Bootsy sound? Bootsy ran parallel filters?

ive always like Bassballs for parallel filters. my fave!

Erm.. not really but almost? Maybe a more simple take on the concept… Sonically is close to a moog freqbox.. or.. it’s most evil sound broken gate fuzz ever made.. it makes almost everything else seem tame… still I don’t know how useful it is for me without it being in a blending loop.. by itself (great for recording industrial bass parts though!) it sounds huge, with a drummer it comes out super mid heavy :)*

I used a bassballs for years, had a sovtek. Bootsy used/uses mutrons but he runs several at a time with feeds from different pickups on his bass. When I ran the dod parallel with the mutron and had the mutron on down sweep it was very pfunky it is really something :animal: funny thing is I know I’ve done that before.. maybe with a chunk 00funk and a moog? It was not as…wow! :idk:

i finally got around to testing the Haxan i ordered, and believe it or not it's kicking my Distortion+, my OG pedal, off the board. it can pretty much get my favored D+ sounds, but a whole bunch of other stuff besides. i was slightly concerned that it might not fit on the board because it's a bigger box, but i would have turned the Randy's Revenge sideways again if i had to. gotta straighten out those reverbs, though.
