Feeling my set up - thanks to dubkitty and gone fission suggestions I switch up the order and I was able to record loops with delay and then dirt without the effect. Moving the MBD2 back in the chain makes it quiet enough that I can throw the gain switch with out blowing my ears off.
I should have patch cables coming next week and then I should have the funds to order a dc7 to fix my power issue. I really want a bit quest but I need both of them to add more pedals

let's see...Mick Ronson obviously played a Les Paul. Carlos Alomar was a Stratocaster guy. i don't know what Earl Slick played. Reeves Gabrels played a Steinberger for Tin Machine and his work with Bowie immediately before that, but i haven't a clue as to what he played later. by the time Fripp was working with Bowie i think he was playing the Roland guitar synth controller he used for the King Crimson refloat, but might have been playing his Les Paul Custom as on the 1979 Frippertronics shows (i saw him at a record store, Peaches i think, in Berwyn, Illinois [a suburb of Chicago] in the summer of 1979). Stevie Ray Vaughan played one of his Strats. i have no idea what Belew played...hadn't he moved to Strats then? who did i miss? anyone know what Peter Frampton played this century?

i really don't know anything about the EMMA compared to other EFs...the only other one i've ever used was the 70s EH--Frequency Analyzer, i think?--which was just heckin' atrocious.
i'm really happy that i was able to help.
i wanted to explain a bit more about the method behind my madness. over the years i learned that if you aren't careful with your placement you'll turn on the wrong pedal by mistake, and that a way to avoid this is to place taller pedals behind lower ones. the two boxes that run horizontal are in the tall enclosures like some early Earthquaker stuff. since they're facing each other at the top i can place them where it's less likely they'll get actuated by mistake. this is important because the MK II has a soft switch and is east to hit by mistake in a tier of smaller pedals due to its height. the PM7 in the corner could be problematic, but phasing is my least favorite type of modulation so i think i'm OK. this kind of arrangement by height can take some finagling; in this case i had good luck and it happened naturally.
the reason the Randy's arse end faces the edge is so i can plug in an expression pedal, and it's placed back enough from the edge that the cables run inside the frame of the board. i've had trouble in the past with cables and plugs snagging on the hard Pedaltrain case which has enough extra space in height that my Ernie Ball full-sized volume pedal fits, but it's pretty tight width-wise so i route the cables so everything stays inside the width of the frame and run cables under the board whenever possible like between the flanger and Randy. a nice collateral effect is that it helps keep the pedals from moving around.

i guess i got lucky then...i got it from someone in B/S/T. at first i was "i dunno..." but after i saw a couple of demos it got in my head and wouldn't come out. i need to readjust the internal trimpot to make it a bit nuttier, but not all the way to the right where it's barely usable. the trimpot is its Pandora's Box.

I totally relate to the manual being really confusing, but it's a lot easier to understand when you have the pedal in your hands and tweak it as you go. In the end the different combinations are quite easy to remember once you got the hang of it.
Besides the tap-tempo function, which is a separated mode as it doesn't involves any oscillation, all the other modes are just different combination of time bending and when/if/how oscillation happens or not.
The video manual on the website page is probably easier to understand than the written one.
Anyway I mainly use the dedicated footswitch in these modes:
- infinite repeats on the edge of oscillation, with oscillation on footswitch release
- random oscillation but carefully setting the rate of it exactly as the delay tempo, so I get a sort of controlled-randomized time stretch that changes in time with the delay tempo (my favorite)
- tap tempo
The modulation is cool, and you got both triangle and square wave (and everything in between), and the mini knobs are similar to the ones on the Malekko 616, tiny but with enough grip to move them easily, btw I mostly set and forget them.

Bitquest is always a good choice in small boards, it can fill most of your needs of you feel the urge of trying something new. I'm almost entirely incorrect! I think Belew just played strats and his stratified duo sonics up until he went all parker. Haven't seen him with anything else outside from som guitar collection thing. on reflection i think Fripp was using the LP Custom on the Bowie albums...it sure sounds like his characteristic mid/late 70s sound as heard on the Eno albums.

Here's what I've been messing around with lately. MF Ring > Bit Commander > Idiotbox Effects Lost Ark (just arrived today) > FM4 > Bass EQ > DD7
I have room for a few more but I'm really trying to gank around with the FM4 and try to get a little more out of all these. I would love to add an MXR Octave (vintage or deluxe, not sure yet) and if I found the "perfect" envelope filter I might add that and keep the FM4 for just the synth stuff. I have never really used an EQ in a "conventional" sense, more for noise but I'm really liking how it works as a boost and mid punch. I ordered it on a whim from a used seller on reverb a month or so ago and really like it - much more than the Behringer Bass EQ I bought for $20, the Behringer just doesn't seem to do the same magic despite being a straight up clone.
The Lost Ark was a total impulse buy, I really like it. I sold my Data Corrupter two years ago as I just didn't feel I was getting it's full potential and it's footprint was huge! But I always missed it, mostly for the square wave/subharmonic, not the megaman noise. The Lost Art is totally "no frills" but has some great sounds, tracks great, sounds insane. Been jamming the PLL into the "Comet Trails" of the FM4 today..... the Ark is so fucking loud, I need to use the EQ pedal to cut it down ad even then it's super loud even with the volume dropped to almost nothing. That's okay! I don't think my neighbours agree but "I'm doing my best".
EDIT: MS-20 pictured but this board is all for bass!!
