This guy has lots of really great tape loops and modded players and toys and shit. Deserves more followers.

Tape loops and food. Followed. Could do without the food though.

if its anything like my module, i dont think its gonna "burn out" the motor. The motors run off say a 9V battery, so the unit takes the CV and regulates it to 0-5V. I don't see how that's gonna hurt the motor? Don't see how that could hurt the tape in any way either.

just picked this up in a trade on local CL it was a throw in to even out values
sounds cool, OD/Dist almost fuzz sounds, no idea what it is
inside says hare and rmxii I think hard to read
anyone know what it is?

Well I was half joking about the ink jet comparison. I don't understand the scientific explanation, but I think the concern is just excessive wear and tear by using it in a manner it was not intended, thus decreasing its life span.

Constant changing of the motor speed on a motor that is made to run at one relatively consistent speed could burn it out? I am not the most mechanically inclined, but when i showed the video to an engineer friend that was their first concern.

I dunno really, but looks like that Walkman has a speed control and the om-1 is just doing the adjusting with CV. I assume adjusting the voltage is what the knob does? Kinda similar to adjusting pitch or tape speed on a 4 track tape recorder for instance. Gotta assume the designer is operating within safe range for the motor.

Except I bought 10 walkmans for under $30 :idk: . And that doesn't have an external motor.

There is always a chance of premature wear on a motor when low or high voltaging them. AC motors are especially prone to low voltage wear (which is why tools saw only use this gauge and this length or under of ext cord).

Also doubt that is his business model. More likely just a necessary thing to offer is their will always be failures with reused stuff like that. It would have probably just been better to build his own setup but that is another nightmare I am sure (machining, etc) which would drive up the cost more.

Got the chance to use the MNP at ILFEU. That thing is cool as fuck.

Aren't we talking about DC motors?

Yea, I am just saying that those come with warnings. DC motors can have the same problems. When I was working on the floppy disc delay, it is really easy to burn those spinning motors out with lower voltages/it was better to use some kind of friction to slow them (though some guy did make it work correctly...much better at that stuff than I). Some don't have that problem. I wouldn't imagine that the risk is too high with the cassette players, just saying that there is always the risk.

More likely that they just fail because they are cheap walkmans more than anything.

Cool, good to know. I didn't look too deep into it but was under the assumption these small DC motors were rated to operate from like 0 to some max voltage. I'm putting together a little electro acoustic set up using the modular to control motors etc. thankfully these motors are dirt cheap :joy:

I wouldn't worry about it haha. It all depends on the way the motor spins (there are a few different ways). More likely the bearings/shaft construction or something mechanical break first. That is usually what happens with those DC fans (I've pushed those up over 10v from like 3 or 5 V operating just fine).

Which is probably most likely to break in those cassette players (or the wheels get worn or head goes bad). Haha, they aren't always the best quality.

Yeah Im not really worried, I've done similar speed stuff with tapes and my portastudio for over 20 years with no problems. :thumb:
Edit: knock on wood...I love that tascam don't wanna jinx it haha

You can say that again.
In two of the intercoms I work on there are cassette tapes and those bastards never show up working.
