That is actually insanely cool. Have you tried cutting cassette loops though? I know I'm the unrivaled champion of hack jobs, but I found it to be the most finnicky and annoying thing ever
Nope, never made those. You dont necessarily need to do that with this thing though. You just gotta rewind the tape every now and then

so cool, but.. wow, talk about overcomplicating things.
i'll just go over here, to my corner, and record a 12 sec clip of whatever i want played, then play it in pitches on my op-1.
or sp-303.
or anything, really.

I think this has a unique quality to it though. Well, I am not too familiar with the Op1, so I don't really know the capabilities, but hear me out. Now, the info on the website, and Brandsmannen comment about looping seem to presuppose that you are using short clips and/or one constant tone and then changing the pitch on each key with the knobs. What I am thinking would be neat is if you have a very long changing tone or even a more complicated arrangement lasting several minutes. Then, as it plays back, since it is constantly changing, you don't really know what you are going to get as you press the keys which is further modified by each pitch knob. So, I think you will be able to create some pretty weird random stuff with it. Plus, how can you go wrong for $285?
That's why I call you baby Basinski.
starting now.

Got this app after randomly seeing a demo on IG.
I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's rad.

I recommend reading the manual on their website. It's short and informative. Fun app!

I immediately filed it under "statements that will never be congruent with my life." But you know.

i shouldn't have, but i did, and it's great, so
also played the DX before i bought it, which sounded very very good, but this was much more intuitive and simple, which i liked.

You folks really don't think $285 is a reasonable price for a handmade totally unique item? As far as I know there is nothing else like it on the market. It is not like I am paying $285 for a fuzz pedal.

Can you do what I described on an Op-1?
Well yeah, but it ofc won't get as cool sounding. It pitches up by playing it faster, but digitally.
We could try it side by side if I had the same sample?
Well I am not really talking about the pitching as the unique feature, I am talking about the "randomness" of what is played when you press a key. So for example, I can stick a Pink Floyd tape in as my source material and let it play for 45 minutes. Now, I can sit there a press just 1 key on this thing for 45 minutes and it will always be a different sound because the source material is constantly changing. In my limited experience of my sp 404 for example, whenever I press a key, it always plays from the beginning of the sample; the sample is not "rolling" in the background. Make sense? Does the Op1 allow the sample to "roll" like that?
It is similar in nature to this synth I saw Brian Eno playing one time, where each time he hit a key, it was a different sound/patch. So, it was a completely random experience.

As someone who never stopped using tapes this is actually a pretty cool piece of kit, IMO.
On the other hand, the OP-1 can do a whole lot of similar things (although I don't know if it will allow a sample to cycle without resetting it on each hit which, I agree, is the main appeal of something like this).

Can you put anything through it? If so

you can have a drone patch with really slow flanger going on and since the pitch shifting is post effects it will make for really interesting timbres.
