a big discussion over subversion vs. overt action. It's got a shit title but it's a good thread.

Also Crass was brought up. It was important.

Man this thread got stupid really quick.

Only lines that matter in this entire "argument"

that the ideas should be informing the equipment, instead of vice versa, and if you've really got your own aesthetic/style it should be able to shine through regardless of the equipment you use

I don't think you guys understood the irony in my last post. I like punk, I'm just saying that all genres have stereotypes and posers, and that those people shouldn't stand in your way of doing what you want.

less defending arbitrary aesthetic ethos and more telling me how I'll like the trio of Digitech pedals I'm getting.

I completely agree. I just don't see it coming through in the majority of modular twiddlery. It's prohibitive to personal expression because of the pseudo-scientific navel-examining nature of the technology. $3000 in gear, right, and it really doesn't matter if Fauntleroy McBeardo or his half-Japanese girlfriend are doing the twiddling; it sounds the same either way. It's pre-prepared. Get on a guitar and the person you are comes through regardless of your skill level. Dick around with a VCO and you are a VCO.

OK, no it was a little too dry to get that you were joking. No worries.

Um, there is a lot more to modular than that.

Well, but that goes back to what you're looking at the modular gear for, right? Like, I'm going through a lot of what you're talking about right now as my modular bits come together, but having some unified idea of what I want to do is keeping my music as uninteresting to the hot half Japanese girls as ever, modular or not.

Which, hm. Maybe I should rethink this.

i agree the major thread dedicated to consuming gear on a website dedicated to consuming gear is the best place to explore the opinion that consuming gear is a bad thing. also like the idea that the less people making music the better tbqh, specially when their fashion taste in brought into the equation. never really thought about that. do continue...
