the late 70's/early 80's artists are probably my favorite guitars ever. i love them. my main and only guitar right now is an 81 and i've never played a guitar i liked better. the one pictured is an ash bodied artist. i've not ever played one of those, but for whatever reason the mahogany artists have always appealed to me a lot more. this is going to sound really crazy coming from me, but i think if you've got a legit MIJ edwards LP, i'm not sure i'd sell it and that iceman to fund this. that's a whole lotta guitar to unload. you don't see the ash ones a ton these days, but over here they're usually not crazy expensive when you do. not cheap, but you know. if however, it's not a japanese edwards, i would do it. that's dumping two more replaceable guitars to get that beautiful beast. just my two cents, but if you go for it, either way you're going to be stoked cause those artists are amazing.

Ok, so im gonna go a check it out on the weekend, and see what it's like.

As for the guitars im unloading, the edwards is MIJ, but it's no vintage, only about 5 years old, so not irreplaceable. The iceman on the other hand, although not irreplaceable, is really nice and sounds amazing with custom pickups...and just looks cool. I could probably sell some more pedals and the edwards and id get there with the funds...

Ill play it first and then decide.

Well, I've had my 1980 Ibanez ST50 guitar up for sale/trade for over a month and no bites. I'm thinking I might just keep it now, but I don't really bond with the sound of the stock pickups. They're super bright/low output PAF style. I like the feel of the guitar, especially the SG kind of feel, but with a Fender type scale length. I have the '78 Greco LP, which is waiting to get the pickups either replaced or refurbished, so I was thinking of doing something with the ST50 to make it very different. Maybe some humbucker sized single coils, because I don't mind bright as long as there's some snarly BITE to it, which the current pickups don't really have.

Any ideas/suggestions?

"Snarly BITE" - I have one guitar that has that...my Gibson SG with stock gibson P90's...i would highly recommend P90's. But you gotta be careful which ones to get...im no expert on the matter...but I have had 2 P90 guitars, and tried a few more. My experience is that the gibson P90's kill other ones i've tried (SD and DiMarzio's). Or it may be something special about that guitar in general.

They'd have to be hb sized P90's, as I don't want to route the guitar body. That's the way I've been leaning, but I've never owned any pickups like that, so I'm really starting from scratch. I've owned a couple guitars with P90's and liked them a lot, but don't have a ton of experience with different pickups, let alone the humbucker sized ones.

yeah I havent ventured into humbucker sized P90's either...yet.

I have an itch though for some HB P90's...but from what i keep reading is that the HB size is slightly more tame than normal P90's...not sure why that is or if there is a tech reason for it.

I found a bunch of sound cloud files of the same riffs being played through a dozen or so humbucker sized P90s for a roundup. The Gibson ones sounded to best for my taste. Though the second place was a tie between the SD Phat Cat and the GFS Mean 90, which sounded almost identical. At least close enough that a small turn on amp knobs would make up the difference. The Gibson P-94 pickups had the most "snarl" to them though, for sure. Everything else seemed to be going for a very different sort of tone, either more snappy or more smooth. Sucks though, because the Gibsons are the ones that cost like $140 a piece.

yeah I agree...not sure why other pickup manufacturers cant get that edge that gibson's can...its amazing that others can make gibson type guitars better than gibson, but they cant do the pickups...

Just got back from vacation at the in-laws house in D.o.S.'s neck of the woods. Would have contacted you for the brews we never got together for at Neurosis but the wife planned too much crap back to back.

I really like the GFS Mean 90s. Definitely have a crisp/snap/snarl, in my humble opinion. Cheap as dirt, too.

I like the GFS Mean 90's too, and I can get the Gibson or Phat Cats for sorta wholesale.

New and re-purposed stuffs! Squier Mustang bass I was looking for, discontinued back in '09 or '10. Finally squicked out the money on this check before it'd get resold. May go back if money = problems. Plays awesome, killer standard tuned bass using pretty much the same weight strings I use for BEAD on a 34" scale bass. An E string .125 has some thunder, and for oem pickups, the duncan designed are some awesome bass pickups once again.



After routing, and then three different pickup configurations, this Agile is back to the stock P-90's, which sound killer, and upgraded electronics w/ vol / tone / blender. Strung G G D G with an .085 for boom. Kind of a mean slide blues of doom guitar. Ridiculous fun to delta drone out on.

That agile kinda looks like a classier sonex. What's the deal with it?

You know I'm a big fan of single coils, Cory. I have a humbucker size P90 from when I had my Ric 480. It's a BG Pure 90. I was thinking of dropping it in my RD, but my two other guitars already have P90's, so I don't think I will. You are welcome to try it out and see how you like it. I absolutely loved it when I was using it. If I wasn't too impatient for a new set of humbuckers for the RD, I would drop it in for the meantime. But I'll probably order something in the next few days. Also, I've heard great stuff about those GFS mean 90's, but never cared too much for the clip of the phat cats when I was looking them up. Hmm....
