I had a Purple Chavel hardtail with rails in the bridge in the late 90's that was great for thrashin.

Looks like I can get a Dean Vendetta XM new for cheaper than used (thanks Free Shipping). So that looks like a hunk of crap, but it's a hardtail with a maple neck neck. So I can massacre it and mod it to hell for almost nothing. Throw some GFS pickups and hardware in there and that should make a decent beater for some brootal metul jamz.

You can play death metal on any guitar, so long as its black.

And pointy. Don't forget pointy. Those Tone Points™ generate all the tone.

PS – Corey, Greco came today and seems to be no issue with any import duties. Well, so far anyways. Until that Kenyan socialist decides to come TREAD ON ME!

Really? How much did you end up paying with shipping and what carrier did they use? If you don't mind me asking.

if that doesn't work out I would check out some of the lower-end Ibanez guitars. They offer a decent selection of hard tail models and imo they are pretty decent "off the shelf" guitars, even at low price points. For anything under, say, $500 I think you get the most for your money from an Ibanez. Decent enough pickups, nice straight and fast necks, good tuning stability.
Dean, Jackson, Schecter and especially BC Rich at the low end tend to have awful pickups and really inconsistent quality.

just my .02. I have owned a lot of crappy metal guitars and basses

/I still have an old Dean Edge 4 string that I just can't part with. It is one of the most comfortable basses I have ever owned. Too bad it sounds like complete garbage lol. I've thought about replacing pickups, adding a preamp, whatever. But I can't justify putting more $ into parts than I did to purchase the bass.

Yeah, I've owned a couple Ibanez RG models before, I would go that route. Probably GIO or something, since I'm trying to go cheap and probably just swap out the bridge pickup and maybe tuners. It's above what I wanted to spend, but probably still doable for not too much more.

I've seriously been considering getting an LTD lately. If I did though, I'd want to get one of the nicer EC models that have a more vintage look, for totally different purposes than this.

I picked up a used black Ibanez GRG121DX for $112 shipped, after about 2 hours of hunting online.

This kind...

That seems about what everyone on Ebay is charging from Japan. What kind of shipping carrier did they use? I have a couple Greco and Orville models I've had on my watch list that I've been too nervous to pull the trigger on.

get a LTD V...hard tail...come with EMG's...black...shark tooth inlays...reverse headstock...none more death metal!

BC Rich is cool...but the cheap ones that i've tried all felt like ass...except the NJ series which are decent.

Schecters are cool too...but heavy as fuck

Ibanez are the best made of the bunch...but dont usually have active pups.

But I dare you...actually...double dare you to get a Squier Hello Kitty guitar. They are hardtail, made pretty well and cheap...you can put a active pup in the bridge...and it would be the best death metal guitar EVER!!!
