Don't know what it will be, but the family told me to pick out something special to mark the occasion. I'd really like a nice Les Paul, but here's the thing - there isn't a ton of music stores around here, so there is no real way of trying them out. I was thinking about picking up one of the Japanese customs (specifically Orville or Edwards), but don't know the best way to go about that either. What are the 'good years' for those again? Those of you who have imported from Japan, what sort of import taxes and fees were you hit with?

Advice on how to go about this is appreciated, my dudes.

I love my Orville by Gibson LP Custom. I got it on ebay from a seller in Japan and it was about 100 for shipping. It got here in about 3 days though. I was told that it was an '86 model but then looking on a site telling how to decode serial numbers I think its actually a '92. It plays better than most of the real deal Gibsons I've ever tried and the Orville's "by Gibson" all have Gibson pickups and hardware. I haven't pulled them out to see but I think they came with 57 classics. I like them. Not at all like the Duncan Distortion or Black Winters. Way lower output and warmer than those but I love them. I've played a Tokai and it was nice, but not as nice as the Orville. Never played an Edwards but I hear they are supposed to be all great quality. I don't think you could really go wrong with any of them. I always like to try before I buy but I took a chance with the Orville and it paid off. Tell me more about this 70s custom though. I've been wanting a 78 Custom in tobacco burst for my birth year but I can never find one when I have the money.

Also, I have an offer to trade my PRS for a VHT Deliverance 60. I don't really want another head but I have always wanted to try one out because they seem like an 800 with more gain. Is it worth trading? All I'm gonna do is play it for a bit and then flip it.

I've never heard of one if they exist. Rad news about that show - makes me wish I was around the PNW.

personally if I could find one, I would do an old Gibson Custom LP...but if you want Japanese...i've had a great experience with my Edwards '57 Custom...built well, all the right woods, probably the smoothest playing guitar i have or have ever had. Most people say the same about Edwards too, so there has to be something to it. Alternatively you can get a Navigator which are an even better made guitar...its basically Edwards' big brother.

If you like the shape...i would also highly recommend Yamaha SG1000...they are amazing guitars!

That would be ideal, but the price and availability will likely be the deciding factor on something vintage.

I dig the Yamaha SG's and Ibanez Artists, but I've never played either. I'll be watching for one to pop up semi-local.

That's not bad for shipping, especially with how quickly it got to you. How much did you have to pay for taxes or import fees?

And from what I've seen, a ton of the lawsuit Les Pauls can be great guitars, but the Orville and Edwards seems to be consistently amazing. Plus the Edwards custom has the yellowed binding that looks snazzy with the gold hardware.

The custom here is black/gold. I am going to try and sneak out of the office for a few and go play it this afternoon. I will let you know the year and price though.

Everything was included in the shipping. It came through DHL and was the only time that DHL didn't fuck a package up too. The old ones have that aged yellow binding. Mine is piss yellow in some spots. Black finish is the only thing that looks right with gold hardware IMO.

That's cool - I may do some emailing and see how many sellers include duties in their shipping cost.

Went to two of the three shops around town. One is more of a piano/band instrument place, but had a Squier Tele Cabronita that was nice as fuck. Didn't plug it in, but it sounded exactly like a tele should unplugged. For like $250 it was an amazingly good guitar.

The other place sold that custom earlier this week, but I was mistaken about the year, it was a newer R8 or some shit and they want waaaaaaaaaay more for it than I would consider paying for a guitar. They had a bunch of rad shit in there, but most of the nicer stuff was all p90s, which I'm set on.

Oh well - I will hit the other store on the way home and see if they have anything good on consignment, since the only new stuff they carry is like ESP and pointy Ibanez stuff.

Speaking of Japanese Les Pauls, impulse eBay purchase yesterday... a '77 Greco with a muhfkn WRAPAROUND tailpice...yes! I'll let y'all know how it plays/sounds when it gets here. I ended up saving $16,200 by not buying the Gibson version.

I've got an eye on an Orville and a Greco that are in listed from Japan. So I'm curious how the duties shake out for you. I found a site that calculates them and it actually seems pretty reasonable, but I always read horror stories about people getting customs fees that are more than the cost of what they bought. Never know what to trust online though, a lot of people are horrendously stupid and leave all evidence of their dipshittery out of their tales.
