I think you can sum up the term "hipster metal" as just being dismissive. Might as well just say "metal, but not the right way" or "pfffft whatever man". There's a version of that for every kind of media that amounts to saying it's something that's to your taste, but you don't like it for some reason other than the thing itself. It's just slightly less obnoxious than using the term "poser" about a band.

Yeah exactly. This is a weird spot for me, because I don't really enjoy the idea of genre tourism when it comes to bands -- we talked about this in the Liturgy thread a while ago, because of course we did -- I'm just as uncomfortable saying "you're not allowed to like this music unless you own the first four Sabbath records and can air guitar the entirety of Born Too Late." At the same time, I definitely think there's an element of tastemakers who decide "ok, now it's all right to like doom. This wasn't cool six months ago, but it's cool now" and there's some natural friction there from the people who were into it because, you know, they actually like the music unironically.

hahaha out of that list of bands it's the only one I really liked an album from.
but I actually grasp the term and really don't find it ill used. and largely all those bands I really just don't like based on the music but hell i think I've stated enough how I approach and enjoy music so that it's not misconstrued. outside of that I don't give a fuck what everyone else is enjoying.
As far as any fucks given about who likes what is with people who likes some of my bands music and then I find out that by my standards all the rest of their taste sucks.. so it makes me sad that shitty taste people like my music cause I figure i'm doing something very fucking wrong.

Grabbed tickets for the Brooklyn Show if anyone else is heading there too. And cue the hipsterdom because of Brooklyn mention.
I think a big part of the hipster metal term come from the fact that the bands became more popular then bands of their genre typically get. Thus people who would not normally listen to bands of said genre listen to them mainly because it is the "cool" thing to do. Look at Deafheaven. They are a mix of black metal and shoegaze, but they still have harsh screeching vocals that a lot of people can't stand. But for some reason their album sunbather got picked up as an album to love and so people that follow the cool trends decided they need to love it too. It will be interesting to see if their next album is loved as much or if it was just a flavor of the month picked up by websites like pitchfork. The same thing for pallbearer except for they are from the doom direction.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Deafheaven’s bassist, Stephen Clark, was lulled to sleep in the middle of his band’s Red Bull Sound Select show in Portland last night. Some might think this would be cause for teasing, but critics are already raving that Clark slept through Deafheaven’s ambient shoegaze black-metal bullshit perfectly.
“It was a flawless performance. Just absolutely flawless. These guys are creating a new genre,” one critic wrote on his Pitchfork worship blog. “When he started snoring I knew I was witnessing the best set of the year.”
And he wasn’t the only critic out there who enjoyed the set.
“They are just so dark. I’ve never seen anything like it. I can’t even wrap my head around how they get so dark,” another critic wrote before concluding that the band must put something in their wash.
Clark explained his predicament to reporters outside the show.
“I was standing there, laying down the bass line for ‘Vertigo’ when I felt this warm calmness wash over my body. It was like I was all wrapped up in one of our signature Deafheaven Blankets©, being gently rocked from side to side,” he said. “It was so cozy that I thought I’d just close my eyes for a second.”
The next thing Clark remembers is Deafheaven guitarist Kerry McCoy kicking him in the ass and yelling “this isn’t fucking funny” while the band attempted to finish the song. “I was tired, too, but I would never fall asleep on stage,” said McCoy. “This isn’t a fucking joke. Everyone was laughing. It’s not a joke. It’s not fucking funny. We’re creating a new genre.”
Deafheaven is no stranger to controversy. After cancelling a tour due to lost luggage containing all of their black clothes, the band had their rider leaked to the public with it stating that each band member requires three lint rollers before taking the stage.A picture of the vocalist, George Clarke, also went viral several months ago when he too was accused of falling asleep mid-performance.
The Hard Times reached out to the Deafheaven vocalist for comment but his response was too low in the mix for us to understand.

Extra thought, a lot of those bands listed above also have a more pop oriented element that makes them more attractive to a wider audience. Baroness was sludgy (FFOM) but got more hard rock as the albums went on. Pelican was slow and building got more riffy. Torche came out of Floor but threw in more pop to make their doom-pop. Deafheaven has those shoe gaze elements. The Sword is stoner rock but came out at the right time for the love of retro rock. The came out at the same time as Wolfmother if I remember right.
And it is kinda funny that people are seriously saying they are creating a new genre when there are other bands that have been doing the same thing like Autumn for Crippled Children. I guess it is along the same lines of people saying Nirvana created grunge because they were the ones who helped it to be popular.
