I ended up with a Presonus Firepod the other day so now I can record 8 tracks at once. Stoked to try it out on this new album we're starting on. Put the kit in the center of the room and put all these mics on it. I usually do the 4 mics on a kit but I figured that since I had enough inputs that I would try out some overheads this time. I've got my cab in the closet behind my heads with a mic on it and the other guitar cab is in another bedroom to the right of the frame. Got pretty good isolation even though the amps are cranked pretty loud. The drums sound good so far, but I'm not happy with the tones I'm getting from my guitar. I gotta fuck around with mic placement. I'm not getting the tone I hear in the room of the guitar coming through the monitors. Will fuck around with that more tomorrow though. This is what we have so far:

Pretty fucking pumped :!!!: :!!!: :!!!:

solid, love that firepod, I'm thinking of buying a second one for back up and use at home so I can do more vocals at home instead of the shed, also is easier cause the wife refuses to do vocals anywhere else but home.

Fuckin aye, Conky. Stoked to hear it. I'm all about the DIY.

Picked up a used Firepod recently, but was bummed to find out that it would not play nice with my (newer) Mac. Damn you, ghost of Steve Jobs.

Well..... To be honest Personus could just update drivers for it, the drive support stops at OS X 10.7. M-Audio did the same thing. That being said, the FirePod is a ten year old product as of this past year.

Kind of hard to point fingers at anybody, really. New operating systems versus old hardware. It's gonna happen someday.

EDIT: Nice setup Conky. Excited to hear a more polished version.

Sounds good mang.

Happy new year, bros.

Kids make the holidays extremely fun and not at all relaxing, which takes some adjustment.

Relatively sad news: My mancave died today. It died a clean an honorable death. And alas, as it was foretold, it would rise from the dead to be reborn in the guest room as the man corner. I have no idea why my wife painted this room orange, but after spending a bit of time in here getting my rig and computer set up, I kinda dig it.

oh man...i know the feeling of losing a mancave...its been just under 2 years since i lost mine...and my man corner has moved about 5 times since...and once kids start walking and crawling, the set up needs to be packed up after every session...cant leave pedalboard on the floor or anything plugged in.

but i guess considering the kids and the enjoyment you get out of them, its kinda all worth it! :thumb:

sounds pretty good Conkster...what if both guitar cabs are in the same room both mic'd up and a third room mic to capture more of the bottom end? i guess you would lose one of the overheads on the drums.

Gonna go back and redo my guitars anyway. I'm planning on doing all my dirt and cleans on separate tracks so I'll probably play around with multiple mics on my cabs. Probably do a dual setup too. I feel like a kid in a fucking candy store with this fire pod. Even though its ancient I feel like a fucking boss for owning it.

to be fair, even if its old, its still pretty fuckin good quality, and thinking about what studios had 20-30 years ago...some of this tech is actually better, which is insane.

I started out with a 4 track cassette recorder and used it for so long that I still don't do punch ins on my guitars. I want to go record at the Jam Room on 2 inch tape. That's my dream studio experience.

I don't believe in punch ins on anything.

Yeah dude it was very bittersweet. I loved my man cave, but it's honestly kind of nice to have my computer and rig in a room where the little one isn't hell bent on destroying it. She loves when I play guitar, but that has turned into her trying to fiddle with everything. The upside is that now my daughter has a fucking enormous playroom at her disposal - and since all of my shit wouldn't fit in my assigned corner, she also has a tv, xbox, and kegerator in there for my enjoyment while supervising

For sure dude. Whatever works for you. I don't really have a horse in this race. I like my Apple stuff but I'm no fanboy. I don't feel the need to defend it at every corner. This is more just a drivers/compatibility on both ends type of thing. Exists on every platform.

Also... I too am not big on punch-ins. Sometimes it makes recording a bit maddening but it's generally just my fault for trying to record these demos like all the riffs are set in stone.

i think it's funny with some people I talk to on Metal archives where their entire album is splices of takes all put together. like not one single song could be played through all the way
