Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
The truth is, America has a clear and rock solid priority when it comes to racial issues. White people feeling safe and comfortable is #1. Anyone is free to bring up their complaints and concerns about racial issues, as long as it's not in a time, place, manner or context that makes white people feel unsafe ("feel", not BE) or uncomfortable (emotionally or morally). Which is to say...never. The only right place is in a book or a movie written by white people or a speech given by a person of color decades ago (but only certain ones that makes us feel hopeful about the future). The only right time is not now, usually some hypothetically time later when everyone has calmed down. The other right time is in the past, when we can admit we were wrong. Even though lots of people felt what they were doing was right at the time, we know we were horribly wrong in the past, but right now everything is fine and we see clearly and it's just the angry person of color that's overreacting and being unreasonable. Even though in another 30 years we will look back at THIS time and cluck our tongues about how backward and wrong we were and how it's so clear, but NOW....
So yeah...it's ok if it's the movie Crash or a very special episode of a tv show where everyone learns a valuable lesson or a speech from civil rights leader from decades ago (only the ones that make us feel hopeful about the "the future", which is NOW, everything is better now). Most often the takeaway is that all racism is the result of backwards ideas or actions by individuals who are either being knowingly bad or are just ignorant and need to be taught. It's never cultural, legal and governmental systems. It's never people finding a great reason to do something that silences the voices of people of color or alienates them. So when the system alienates and silences people of color, it's always ok, as long as the people moving the gears don't feel they were being purposefully evil and racist or willfully ignorant. Meaning they didn't say the "n word" or talk with a condescending southern drawl or claim they were genetically superior to anyone. Everything else is fine, as long as we can find a way to justify it as an issue of safety and comfort.
Not that I think about this stuff all the time and it eats away at me from the inside or anything.

Yes. I don't want to write a long post about this, because I've done it before here, but admitting that you almost certainly have some prejudicial attitudes and behaviors is a good first step.
The thing that set this whole series of events in motion is that a students said she was 'made to feel uncomfortable.' I brought up the larger discussion happening on- and about college campuses, but no one here knows or reads about that stuff.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

That literally happened in DEAR WHITE PEOPLE. Mr. Fox watched that too, and I remember posting in the Neflix thread "Why the fuck did that kid call the police?"

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
Dad got himself stranded driving the van that hasn't worked properly in years and, on top of that, he has my keys so there's no way I can pick him up/jump the van.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
Just to illustrate how much of a hassle that entire situation was, it just now got resolved.
First I had to get a neighbor to take me and pick him up so I could get his keys + the van's battery.
Then I neighbor avoided death four times while the neighbor drove.
Then we drove my car to Autozone.
Then they insisted on spending the next hour and a half charging the battery. We went home to wait.
Once we got back we found out that that hour and a half only resulted in the battery being half charged.
Also, the battery was a year out of warranty so it's not like we could just exchange it.
Finally, we drove back to the parking lot where I spent what felt like an hour trying to get the battery fixed in place in ~20º weather.
Since the battery was barely charged we had less than an hour to haul ass back home before it died in the street.
So, rather than take a safer, back roads route, my dad floors it through an intersection (which I got stuck in since I was right behind him), gets onto the highway, continues through 2 lights and several stop signs (miraculously never hitting a red light or getting stopped by a cop for the four stop signs he blasted through), and makes it home just before the battery died.
I wish there was a smilie for the anxiety trip I just went though.

Yeah, a new alternator will cost ~$180.
It's not a big deal to me since I've hated that van for years and only drive it when absolutely necessary, but my dad prefers it over the Focus.

The most frustrating thing (in repair work, that is) is that it's always the people that call you constantly to check and see if their repair is finished three weeks ahead of the estimated schedule.

Exactly. The people who ask what the turnaround time because they are back ordered or whatever and then let their order sit for two weeks or more. Like, wtf guys...jrfox92 wrote:Agreed.aens_wife wrote:When people don't pay their invoices it makes me crazy mad. PAY YOUR BILLS SO I CAN PAY MINE!!!!!!!

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
Had a rough day the other day. Didn't shower cause I didn't want to waste my time. Came in to work feeling gross. So I was off all day/felt like a zombie. Had some crazy lady come in and start cussing us out. Whatever, told her calmly she had to leave. Until she called me a fucking beaner. Lost my cool, was about to kill a bitch. Thankfully a coworker of mine stepped in. Im just glad I didnt get fired.
Of course, timing was perfect. Not 10 mins later I get a call back from a therapist office I got in contact with. They're gonna have a therapist call me back once they've found someone that would fit best with what I have going on.
So yea, emotionally exhausting day. Just came home and crashed. Thankful for my girl being there for me.
Today is much better. Im clean, Im caffeinated and ready to go home later. lol

Got put on a potentially career enhancing project. Working for someone with a reputation as a sociopath for this project. Yay.

Re: The spite, hate, rage, apathy and mild irritation thread
My coworker who I work with closely every day really fucking hates me. It's just stone cold silence whenever we're working alone together and every attempt to engage in anything light hearted or small talky to lighten the mood is immediately batted away with this "why the fuck are you even talking to me" attitude. She's not like this with the third person we both work with. They're constantly chatting and stuff. I'm the newest one and I'm not nearly as good at the job as they are, so I understand if she's frustrated with me. I just wish the atmosphere wasn't so unpleasant. I'm really trying.
