Well, I can kind of agree with the underlying idea, but the notes are the notes, you know?

I unno man, a chord is literally just notes together by definition. I can't even analyze that sentence. It makes my head hurt.

The nomenclature leaves a lot to be desired, for sure, but the idea that you shouldn't be blatantly ripping people off is one I agree with.

yurp. not even worth getting mad over people that can't see past their limitations. i just guffaw and rub myself seductively at them.
sorta related - other day at a show had a kid ask me how i come up with riffs, what i do if i'm stuck. i started talking about looking up different chords that fit and playing with phrasing and inside that chord, he cut me off with, "oh. yeah. i don't learn chords. i MAKE MY OWN. it's like..... cheap. and stealing someone's music. did you write that chord? no. so it's not yours to use."
kayyyyyyyyyyy.

So you were giving him a legit answer and he cut you off to show off his dickishness? Ruuuude.
Saying DJ's aren't musicians is dumb. Because people like Flying Lotus or Aphex Twin don't use physical instruments they're aren't real musicians? Fuck off with that bullshit. They are musicians, just because the equipment and technology they use isn't "conventional" doesn't mean that it takes no work to get the sounds they get. Also, if someone really wants to go that route, most DJ's are tradition musicians. Lots of insane piano players in their bunch.

for shiggy. and i want to HOPE that's what he meant. but..... i dunno. i think he was just a youngin up his own ass about how he was the first to do ANYTHING when..... at least with traditional instruments, pretty much everything has already been done if you piece it out enough.
and an accepted combo of notes that we have accepted as a chord is a very basic building block. at least to me.
Birches Flavored Puddin Pops - lol. yeah. idiot kid. but whatcha gonna do.

Yes very much. Even extremely dissonant stuff, that stuff goes way back, that stuff is primal old stuff, it's just "modern" "western" "tempered" musical sophistication kind'a tried to wipe that away so everything was all nice and organized and raped by pure thoughts.

Well, it was just a jitterbug caught up in having to be original, to the point of being a ding-dong and rude. I remember feeling like that in a way but I am certain that I wasn't such a dingy about it, from that time period:
What song can I sing that hasn't already been sung
What can I do that hasn't been done
I don't want to be archetypical
Much rather be it's reciprocal
And I don't remember anymore of that, anyways.
I think most of us would agree that ripping people of is a no-no.
I am sure that I am not the only one to have this experience one or twice but I know I have written riffs or chord progressions (not G-D-C) and then heard them on the radio a few months/years later. I know one time I dropped the song from jam times because it was disheartening and have said screw it before. Also, I know I have coincidently or subconsciously "come-up" with something really close to existing material from other artist.
Microtonality is definitely an interesting subject and discussion, too bad it doesn't lend itself to translating on bass/guitars though.

So, I'm kinda at a crossroads with my music. I've been writing a lot of stuff lately that I'm actually really happy with (even lyrically, which is weird since I hate doing that), and I'm getting to the point where I don't even know if I want to play with a guitarist. I've got plenty of wattage and amps, chording a lot of stuff to really beef up simpler passages, plenty of dirt from pedals and power tube distortion, and a great octave down pedal (Behndy's Subterranea) for girth down below. I'm kinda missing the pitchfactor's upper octavey stuff, but I use so little of it that it's a waste on my board. I've been really thinking about that new DigiTech Bass Whammy though, it sounds real good and does polyphonic tracking, which I would absolutely need for chord work. Anyone have any opinions about it for use in a two-piece?

Bass whammy is great, it tracks well, doesn't do more than 3 notes that clean though. Sounds kinda lame clean but you'll be running pedals and colored amps so that's moot
