Yeah he's absolutely right, tbh. What he's talking around is the way people interpret the space that music exists in -- which is a learned skill that a metronome can circumvent or retard (in the actual sense of the word). I have friends that play live to a click and there's certainly a place for it, but it's much more important that everyone in the band or jam session knows where the beat is, rather than where a metronome says it is.
edit: goddamn it BC EXACTLY RIGHT

I understand not using a metronome when learning a melodic part or whatever but I do think a metronome is important to structured practice by someone looking to build and maintain rudimentary skills. Without timing, what is an 1/8 note or a 1/16th note?
I have found, that as a bass player, when playing with others, my timing is crucial. Drummers are not a be all, end all of timing so there is definitely push and pull live, feeling if someone is speeding up or knowing when to reel them in or whatever. A lot of that just happens live and through repeatedly playing with someone.
Strict adherence to a metronome is a hamper when swing is involved, etc. but know the downbeat.
Of course, this all IMHO, I have gone long periods without a metronome but I really do take pride in my timing because I did a TON of practice with a metronome and it still shows today.

Do you actively think about notes as an 8th or a 16th when you're playing, though, or is it just a "this is the note, and this is how long I'll hold it"?

Re: The Kitten Room and TB Mega Thread ^.^
That would be funny but no.
When writing/jamming out parts I do think something like "Oh, if I play faster to build this part up then hold notes longer here, it will be better for the song".
I guess one point of practice is to make some things unconscious so we can get down to the business of really playing, letting go of thought and just feeling/being in the moment.

Didn't he get banned from TB? Not you Jeff, we know you did. LOL
 LOL
I've tried metronomes and they don't work for me at all. I have to have a drum type rhythm that actually sounds like a drum. Not an annoying ticking. Shit just frustrates and angers me.
I remember I was playing with a guitar dude once and he told me how many beats per second a song was supposed to be. I was like "the fuck are you talking about dude". I guess if timing is that important to you, whatever. LOL. I play the way I play. Fuck all that noise. If I'm playing someone else's shit I can see it though, but even then, you can put your own signatures on shit and it sounds good.

He did. He went out in epic style too. I think his "insult the mods because I rage quit" thread is still on there.jwar wrote:Didn't he get banned from TB? Not you Jeff, we know you did.LOL

This puts mr. Berlin in a rarefied air with me and 'Caner. I'm ok with being the least talented of the bunch.

One of his many rage quit thread. I think he was banned a few times. That thing has probably been highly sanitized.

Re: The Kitten Room and TB Mega Thread ^.^
lol. i talk in bpm, but it's more a Growing Up On Electro, Not Rock thing? i mean. i am NOT going to say "yeahhhh that was 98 bpm. i'm thinking more 96", but if i want to say something that drags, i think/say 70 bpm blah blah et cetera.
that Berlin video was stupid. who the hell tells someone to learn to a click? i've been told "learn it, then try to play at this slower tempo, then faster, then the correct tempo.", not to figure out the parts on a clico or nothing.
and every example he cited was asinine.
clicks are good for some people when learning skills, timing shizz. nott everything is for everybody, but they have their place.
KINDA NEED TO BE ABLE TO HANG WITH A CLICK DURING RECORDING THOUGH.

I think if you are not able to play with a metronome, you should learn how, because some people are pretty steady, also if you wanna play with robots they are usually pretty on tempo too.

Girls. That turn into squids. That shoot ink on everything. So many sexuals.
Fun game though.
