it's a Japanese + Game Design double major on paper. i've configured it so i'm focused on language, history/cultural studies, academic writing and drawing/graphic design rather than more involved aspects of game design though (i'm interested in multimedia localization).
Only advise I can tell you is to make shit, either on your own or as part of a small fan game. But keep making shit and slowly (or not, becoming viral is always a thing) people will come to you. Start talking to other artists, go to events when you can. The life of game dev requires a lot of self promotion nowadays unless you're lucky enough to have an in.

mmm. i'm working on a shmup by myself at the moment but it's kinda hard to concentrate on, i'd rather be doing a fan translation/repackage but i need to improve my skills before i can get stuck into that.
perth is a hole as far as game dev goes so i'm gonna be on the interwebs mostly.

Seriously though, you need to network like a motherfucker. College doesn't teach you much you couldn't learn yourself other than how to work within a team/business/beaurocracy.

I had a double major in English and Marketing (with like a 3.95GPA in each), and couldn't land an unpaid internship as a copywriter because I didn't have any experience (so go to those fucking job fairs).

After leaving the country, I finally got a job as a copywriter thanks to DarkAxel (), and have subsequently had freelance stuff drop into my lap once a month just by talking to people. Which brings us back to network like a motherfucker.

Cosigned so hard. I have a 'real job' now* but I was paying my bills with freelancing in a creative industry for a while. As long as you know people and develop a reputation for delivering what they want on the deadlines they set you'll be fine, but you need to know people in order to do that, and school/university is the best place to cultivate those relationships. It's exactly the same as being in a 'successful band,' tbh (not that I have a fucking clue about that harr harr harr)

*And, actually, I got my 'real job' by freelancing for someone that recommended me because... wait for it... we went to school together and he knew I could do good work and his bosses knew he wouldn't give that recommendation if he didn't mean it.

I live in a world where 8pm is super late for me.

This truly is the darkest timeline.

You just have to draw enjoyment from the fact that on another timeline, everything is awesome and you're doing great!
