I feel like this is a nice one-two combo for a Sunday night. First up, an amazing set of solo hurdy-gurdy from my music series back in November:

And for a chaser, a concerto for jaw harp, amplified throat and other unusual textures. Excellent contemporary chamber music, written by Bekah Simms for chik white.

Some of my favorites this year in music.

Recommended by my guitar teacher - what a performer!

I never thought it was possible to fall more in love with a record but I truly did this year.

WVH is is prodigy to his dad - the songwriting is in his fucking DNA, incredible musician ( vocals, bass, guitar, drums) - really loved this record, a lot heavier than the last one.

While Coventry is widely regarded as an absolute funeral (I didn't go, but some of my friends did) and largely a mess musically, the soundcheck before day one gets very good:

i've listened to Coventry. "The Curtain With" attained a greater level of poignancy when Trey tried to play the coda in the wrong key, apologized, and took it from the top of the E-flat section as they rode for what then looked like the last time. i've been known to listen to it on purpose. but most of it is not just bad, but painfully bad. if i'd been a Phish guy then i'd have been as devastated as i recall people being online.

This Is The Kit is a band from the UK centered on the songs of Kate Stables. the excellent band includes Rozi Plain, who has her own solo career and is a phenomenal bassist. Kate's songs are unlike anything i've ever heard, with a strong world music/jazz influence that never announces itself and an odd, cyclical form of lyric writing where passages recur, lines morph with repetition, and everything goes in circles instead of coming to a peak. i saw them in DC back in October; they're coming back and i'm seeing them at The Barns At Wolf Trap next month. i am absolutely chuffed that she's back again, and playing much larger venues. sometimes the good guys win.

ADX - Déesse du Crime

Discovered this '80s French heavy metal band several years ago but never bought the Exécution album for proper listening because the prices were pretty high. Only recently I learnt that there was a reissue 2.5 years ago. I just snagged the reissue (with demo tracks as a bonus!) for a normal price and have listened to it a lot. France has never been the hottest metal country (except for some black metal) so this is a very nice change to most of the English/Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish language music I listen to.

Revisiting some post-rock/post-metal lately. Cult of Luna, ISIS, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Silver Mt Zion, Barn Owl.

this was one of the best songs of the early 90s. it should have been a hit, but you know how that goes. it got covered by Victoria Williams (no relation) but that didn't help much. i saw them sing this on Letterman and nearly died.
