RIP Andre Previn. Sometime cool jazzer/cocktail purveyor, classical popularist, working in the shade of Lenny B. I will always be grateful to him for conducting the premiere of this violin concerto by George Rochberg, a piece which seems well-balanced between the early 20th century primacy of serialism and the neoclassical/minimalist waves to come, but, at the time I found it as a crass college student, it played a big role in opening me to more dissonant music (and taught me to appreciate the difference between dissonant and atonal). I hope somewhere you're cooking up something tangy with old George.
