And you are on which side of the debate?
The only time I listen to Hot Cross is when I see a reference to them, think "well, are they really that unexciting?" and then put them on for 2-3 minutes before turning that shit off and finding something I actually want to listen to.
My memory of Hot Cross is always better than actually listening to them, if that makes sense. I think to myself, "man, Hot Cross, they were pretty cool" then I put it on and get tired of it after a few songs.

lol same here, weird...

"Man it's been a long time since I listened to hot cross, they were so fucking rad..."
Listening to Hot Cross for five mins: "Meh, I'm not in the mood for hot cross".

I KNOW RIGHT?!

Also I'd dispute Rites of Spring being underrated or unheard of or whatever really. Growing up pre - Internet, the thing with all the dischord stuff was it was all kept in print and their distribution was REALLY good. To the point where 14 year old me living in deepest darkest suburban Australia was able to go to the local jb hi fi and pick up the cd version of end on end. I've seen like five local bands cover 'for want of' over the years (I was in two of them, one of them also did 'my better half' by One Last Wish).

When shape of punk to come came out my girlfriend at the time was like 'you think that's cool? Check out this!' and put on plays pretty for baby and made me read the liner notes. Years later I can't really vibe with refused anymore but the hair still stands up on my arms when I hear 'to you, the bold and foolish lambs...'.

A couple days ago I got hit by a car while riding my bike to work, then driving to a show last night my battery went flat. So I was sore all over and really feeling shitty, just wanting to go home and cuddle my dog. Sitting in my jump started car charging the battery I listened to songs like 'n-sub ulysses' and 'maniac drag strip' and got totally psyched back up, then went inside and we played one of the best shows we've done yet. Never fails.

Incidentally this band lost our bassist recently and my immediate thought was 'fuck it, I'll switch between guitar and bass, worked for Q And Not U!' haha

Alexisonfire, Protest the Hero, Billy Talent, Grade, basically any heavy Canadian band, because that's who toured here and who we moshed to :) But all the musicians respected and knew Rites for sure

EDIT: Moneen, too, every scene kid in New Brunswick had a copy of The Red Tree
Moneen is crazy underated. Love em. Theory is my shiit

SO underrated.

I'm not saying it's because Canada but... yeah, because Canada.

They could go toe-to-toe with any other good mainstream emo band from the early 2000s.

So tight together.

I once saw Jamie playing the clean breakdown in 'this is a hostage situation' with his left hand while changing a string with his right.

but... Rites of Spring....
Or Fugazi. or Minor Threat. or Lungfish. or Q and not U.
Oh don't get me wrong, I love all that shit. NoU is just made for me.

length of bangs is proportional to facial piercings. That spock cut was always there.

I am like a huge fucking emo kid and have never done anything to my hair other than wash and dry it.

I like to think you're talking about scene kids.

But... sigh. What's the difference.

Specifically referring to the Swing Kids / 31G / San Diego scene. Though I really do love some of that music.

But to me screamo first applied awesome bands like Sleepytime Trio, Frail, Clikatat Ikatowi, Shotmaker etc. I can't get down with any of those 2000's bands with the notable exceptions of City of Caterpillar, Stop It and Off Minor.

Yea, that's all I meant. It was funny watching crusties grow bangs and trade their patched cutoff dickies for skinny jeans in socal for a while there. A lot of the romulans were into Charles Bronson and le shok and stuff. It was just funny to watch. Then they grew beards and got sweaters. It freaking 90 degrees at night and they have a beanie and a sweater.
