the questions will probably come down the road, stuff like is this long enough/too long, too simple/complicated, recorded well/not well enough, and the like. i have to try and figure out some way to get sounds down without a computer to record on other than the work-from-home laptop that belongs to my employer who frowns upon downloading non-approved software, or the ability to connect a decent mic to my iPhone which has no 3.5 mm jack. i just may wind up with no-fi recordings, which might not be entirely bad because they'd be a fairly blank canvas.

Will be in a cabin for much of august without any guitars, so hopefully I can get something in within the next month.
non-guitar found sounds could be extremely useful...think of Eno's On Land. take microphones outside and record the birds, the frogs, the rain, and the wind in the trees. also if there's a body of water or a river/stream water sounds would be great.

Experience has taught us that for the stems, shorter is generally better.
Experience has also taught us that for the stems, basic is better. Fewer effects, less "produced", less elaborate, less structured — after all, someone else is going to add their own effects/structure when they build their track in phase 2.
And suitable for an "ambient" compilation.

Few constraints makes the imagination spin!

Apologies, I only heard the results of the first two, not the source tracks. Are we to contribute one source track?

The previous rule of thumb I gave was 1 to n source tracks, where n is the number of participants. So, no hard limits but maybe not more than 10 things?

From the way I work with the source pieces, I'd say more short things give better pickings than, say one long one. On the other hand, I've used mid-length ones as the sort of pad or bed for tracks I've assembled.

Will 16 bit / 44K be alright for this? I think that for the immediate future (the next couple of months), that's gonna be my upper limit in terms of file fidelity/resolution....if that's gonna mess it up for everyone else, I should duck out and wait for the next round.

Makes me wish I still had my old Zoom field recorder, I lost it a long time ago. But I do still have a lot of raw material on a hard drive somewhere, which was originally meant for use in some ambient sound experiments.....I'll see if I can find the old folders......

I could also just get a Volca and bring it out to the woods :)

Nah, it'll be fine! I'm no Fidelity Freak, won't cause a problem for folks to upconvert.

Think I got my first Okta sounds down... was noodling away on the lap steel with a l'il tube drive pedal that showed up the other day. Ended up with something that might even be a keeper for something else I'm working on, but the tone trials on the way there should provide something appropriate.

And then put away the lap steel today to make a different setup, so fooling around with that over the course of the week might lead to some more sounds.

Damn, I'm sad I'm missing round three; I guess I haven't been lurking on here enough lately! Oh well, I honestly don't think I would have had the time to commit to this right now anyways, but subscribing to listen to the final results!

good thing the pieces aren't due till the 15th...i burned my left-hand fingertips trying to fix a pair of nylon-strapped Teva sandals and they peeled for over a week before revealing blisters on the 1 and 3 fingers. they hurt like hell and aren't going to be guitar-friendly for at least another week. i guess i can do faux lap steel with a guitar laying flat on my lap if all else fails.
