vidret wrote:(how does the black box ehx russian stone sound compared to the rest? give me the juicy)
There are slight coloration differences from model-to-model. (the ICs and other parts changed over the years) Not sure if it's still on YouTube, but there was once a video of 3-4 being compared, which I can't find. The differences aren't necessarily huge, but can be found in an A/B comparison. I've not played a ton of Stones--including the 80s/90s model with the black/red face. My friend had 3-4 and I took the black one, leaving him a green Sovtek. I got him deeper into effects, and he grabbed a 70s Polyphase, which I'm not crazy about it. I think Howard Davis' reissue model goes further and has an overall more pleasing sound. (it's ugly and looks somewhat cheap, but it's not as noisy) Also, I kind of think that I thought the original Polyphase was somewhat thinner than I expected. It wasn't this magical *wow* moment, when I got to pair it with a 70s Korg Lambda.

Also also, did the crap demos permaquench any GAS for the Polaron?
The unlabeled box was one man’s vision for the ultimate trem/phase combo. It was built by 4ms and the seller claimed it cost him about $600 for all the mods & CV extras (probably accurate). Somewhere I have a diagram for it. That was an eBay find I think—probably set me back about $180 several years ago. That's why I don't pay for custom work. I let other people do that for me.
I'll get a Polaron eventually. I heard one demo, that definitely got close to the Mutron Phasor II sound. I've been focused on plucky sounds and glitch delays this year, so haven't been adding as many phasers to my ranks as a normal year.

Mine is a Classic XII (circa 2008), not a BK/Programmable model, so there's no plug.
Using the included program plugs, you can make the frequency center lower or higher. You just plug the control plug of your choice into the Program jack. The red plug lowers the frequency centre and the blue plug raises it.

Who noticed that Warm Audio revisited the Roland Phase Five? I saw this about a month ago, but it looks like they're shipping now. If it was a normal year, I would've already scratched that itch.
innnnteresting, thanks echorec
do the phaser and trem lfo(s) sync on the 4MS custom? Dry/Wet blwnd on the phaser? lol, look at me macking on it like I could just pop down to Sam Ash and vrab one of my own
and yeah, I think Polaron GAS is going to survive 2020 if I do
Didn't know that about the TC and frequency center plugs. I remember some fancypants overdrive from a few years back that incorporated diode plugs.... that's all I got right now

I forgot about that they remade those. I only remember that the red one looked waaay less cool than the old school one. Weird that they didnt keep the function of the plug atleast.
did anyone answer the harmonic trem thing btw? i think they are different things but does the same effect to me. like they couldnt replace eachother but i would never have both on the same board

dang, that Polaron looks intriguing!
I like that they have a key input for the ENV, I wish pitchshifters had something like that
I had & loved a black russian Small Stone, but sold it when I went travelling
after that I thought of myself as more of a flanger guy,
but I have a feeling I'm turning back towards liking more phasery...

I’ve had a Boss PH-1r forever. It’s survived various culls, where others have not. Whetstone, Small Stone and a few others have been purged. I don’t even really like phasers on bass that much. Every time I want another one I remind myself how often I’d flip them.

This is mine I like it.
The Ibanez PH10 Phase Shifter is the phase shifter of the '80s. It features a mode selector that allows you to go from a six stage phase shift to a ten stage phase shift. This is a considerable advantage when you realize that most phase shifters only use a four stage phase shift. The PH10 also features speed, width and feedback controls allowing you to get just the sound that you want. The PH10 is truly the phase shifter of today.

I think I'd have to prefer the black one in this video because it just looks x10 times more excellent
I like the green stuff looks wise better But no not a big diff, but, big diff between the Sovtek made stuff and the EHX.. I had a green one at the same time as a 70's one and a nano one and the difference is the Sovtek gets louder while the EHX stuff gets quieter... at least on bass... I can't remember the difference on treblely instruments..

i thought the Pearl phaser that echorec's got was the phaser of the 80s?
seriously tho, I'm just beginning to appreciate higher than four stages for guitar (the higher stage stuff sounds good on synths/keys to me)
lots of nuggets to check out in here
I will say, the A/DA Final Phase is a pretty awesome 10 stage phaser, with the fairly unique ability to modulated the primary lfo for some gnarly wobble, and a built-in dirt circuit. It also goes for inexplicably low prices sometimes, which...might have something to do with how huge it is and that ac power cord hangin' out the back
but if you really want to check out high stage levels, the Ghost Fax rules, and the Polaron intrigues.
I wasn't joking around about the border between flanger and phaser, btw.
Although they use distinctly different means to create comb filters, once you get up to the number of notches created by a twelve stage or higher phaser, the sonority becomes more than a little reminiscent of a really short time delay flanger
Also, I'm not sure why, but higher stage levels on the Ghost Fax (and from listening to Polaron demos) seem to add some weird apparent wobbliness to the lfo that's even had some on TGP worried their phaser was broke't - I think it might have something , again, to do with the high number of notches being created, although at least one wag theorized that in the Polaron there were two phasers in series creating the higher stage levels, which

Yes, well, I think TGP secretly stands for "The Gooped Phaser".
I also still want one of these (or a clone thereof):

I love my Ghost Fax - there are times when moving the poles control where you can land between two values and it warbles away to itself, but it's not easy to do deliberately
