Start with Maiden. Put it in the disc player of your choosing. Jam the Maiden. When it is done, eat. Then play more Maiden.

As for metronomes.....you can totally get away with it if you will never be the person in your band keeping time. Usually the drummer is the pace maker as they usually have the most "notes" per measure but it does kind of make it one dimensional and force your drummer (or a goawdam mutafuckin guit player) to always play more than you.

01) oh hell yeah pretty, pretty GET OUT OF MY MIND cover.goroth wrote:Delta that is a fucking awesome tat. Holy moly.
Ahab just released a new album, which I'm about to listen to, but the cover art prompted me to post it for Behndy's enjoyment.
Also: as some of you know I am now the proud owner of a bass. Yippee! My goal with the bass is to lay down some tracks for all the tunes that I have that don't fit my main band. Um, my only band. Yeha. Anyway, at some stage I'd like to avoid the pitfalls of *guitarist-picks-up-a-bass-and-assumes-he-can-play-bass*. Anyone got any good resources (either online or a book or something) for getting the ah... basics... of bass under control? I'm guessing that I want to play finger style as I fucking love Steve Harris and Alex Webster, but right there you have two dudes with insanely different technique. If it's any help the stuff I eventually want to play will be grindy-proggy death stuff, and maybe a bit of Neurisis wank fest. At the moment I'm probably just going to use a pick and guitar that shit up, but that feels like a crap long-term approach.
Any and all advice is appreciated, except "get lessons", which would possibly be my first choice, but is rendered impossible by the terran day being limited to 24 hours (fuck you earth's rotation!).
02) i have such shitty practice skills. you COULD always email tracks to ILF bass buddies and see what they come up with. just sayin' .

Um... On the neck I use all four fingers a lot, but with my right hand I use two mostly, and practice more and more to use three fingers for the Entwistle tones. If your metal I'd say " yeah, learn how to use three or four fingers for plucking and start really slow". Two fingers is a natural feeling thing, but three throws a curve ball and muscle memory I think can alleviate problems.goroth wrote:Any thoughts on two fingers versus three?
Um...
Edit: Just remembered to say that with three finger plus plucking, doing a fan thing where you go "1-2-3-2-1" or "1-2-3-4-3-2-1" is better than doing "1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4". Try it, I just tried too but my hand keeps doing "1-2-3-2-1" instead of the latter.

I like to use the index and middle fingers for plucking and the ring and pinky fingers for muting the E&A strings when I'm not playing the E&A. I hate when I hear myself or someone else playing and having them strings droning away. It's just bad technique. Bass players, please mute your low strings when not playing them, unless of course you're playing drone and the strings droning away are in key.WayToHip wrote:Um... imo three fingers is mostly unnecessary, I think you would get farther and more utility out of spending your time getting really good two finger technique. If you wanna use three fingers, I think it's best to use your thumb, index and middle. the thumb is super useful.goroth wrote:Any thoughts on two fingers versus three?

Re: The Kitten Room and TB Mega Thread ^.^
I agree! I tried the whole using every finger method and it just is a pain in the ass. Unless you're playing a 6 string, then it can be useful at times. But I mean, who plays a fucking six string? Is that even a bass? hahahaha
 hahahaha
Also, I'm not muting shit!!!!!!!!!!!! That's called clanky love sex noise! I love it!
For real though, I practice technique more than I practice learning music hahahaha.

I just use two alternating but I rarely go faster than, say, Song for the Dead, which is not fast in the grand scheme of things.goroth wrote:Any thoughts on two fingers versus three?

That's what a normally do too… both finders running 16th notes, but some times the third is fun to add in, also doing 16ths with your index finger and playing 8th note accents with your ring finger and thumb is fun.

I play with two fingers, but I incorporate my thumb in there all the time for strumming, popping and weird stuff.
