This week I have acquired a new Macbook Pro Retina and a new 1000W Mackie Thump15. I am confused because I always use old/used/quirky things but excited because now I can actually push my computer and amp hard without fearing their push back. Also I asked my boss for a 25% raise and he agreed so f it, treat yoself.

Now I need some sort of preamp that'll help out when running bass or guitar through a PA speaker... suggestions?

A lot of folks around here rave about the rusty box. I've never tried it so I can't give you any opinions about it. Maybe someone will chime in if you ask about it in the gear thread.

i'm looking for something because i'm tired of using my big ol' needy tube amp (60+ lb head, big bulky cab) and just bought an active PA speaker (1000W, 15" driver, 33lbs ). just looking for something to make it a bit more ampy if you know what i mean. also i intend to play guitar through it too. is this the dumbest idea ever?

You don't have to make it sound like Weston. It is a versatile box, it just happens to do that thing so well that everyone thinks of that.

You can actually dial out the clank and have a nice warm punchy tone. With low and hi gain modes and the gain control, it has a ton of range.

It's an on/off switch on the pot. Really handy on a battery-only pedal (as long as you remember to use it…)
