Talking about writing music...I've recently got a hankering to play some old school death metal...obituary/dismember/entombed stuff...but since i sold all my dirt pedals besides the Quantum Mystic and Pharaoh i find myself Distortion-less!!!

I'm sure this is only a phase that and not a long term thing...so with that in mind i'm looking for a cheap pedal i can use...to that end i saw a Hardwire metal distortion and Boss Metal Zone, both very cheap second hand. But then i started thinking about the HM2...but they are pretty expensive. What other cheap alternatives are there that would serve the purpose??

I've been on an Entombed kick myself lately. I have an HM2 and another on the way I scored for $50 (they can be found for cheap once in awhile). I also have an DOD Super American Distortion pedal on the way that I also got for around $50. It's supposed to be a clone of the HM2. There is also the Behringer clone. A friend of mine has both the Behringer and the HM2 and the Behringer sounds thinner to my ears.

I can also get a convincing HM2 style tone out of a Black Forest or the vintage Rat clone that I got from Chicago Stompworks. The Rat clone I won for around $60. They have a lot of auctions on ebay that start very low but also their buy it now prices are fairly reasonable.

I see that Bong was mentioned on the previous page, cool band, I stumbled across them on YouTube a few days ago

They've been one of my favorites since I heard their Roadburn 2010 set -- not live, unfortunately, but on wax in '11. If you like them you should check out Queen Elephantine -- who did a straight up epic split with Elder way back in the day:

been bumming pretty hard because i had been jamming with a coworker for about a year and we had 6-8 songs written and i got promoted about a month ago. now i'm his boss so we can't make music together anymore. pretty shitty. we had found a drummer and things were going very smooth. couldn't have been happier. dreams die. i wrote all of my parts and he's totally cool with me taking those to somebody else and being like, 'hey here are our songs,' but i've never played guitar in a band before so i'm being all weird about it. sigh. fuck me, right.

Elder's rad. Their evolution has been pretty crazy -- that Split's the first thing they ever released, and it's a million miles away from the Dead Roots Stirring/Spires Burn stuff. Not in a bad way, just in a different way -- like the difference between Aesbestos Death and Holy Mountain.

thanks for the suggestions guys, I have 2 condensers, 2 sm57's, various mics for vocals and the kick is mic'd. it goes into a board which then goes into a scarlet 18i8 or directly to the 18i8. right now the computer that is the end recipient of all that is fubar. Hopefully will have it running by next week. I was just thinking that tabbing stuff out would be helpfull. and would work for us till the recording setup is fixed.

So our practice time has been diminishing lately, and we are trying to write. We're still coming up with good stuff, but the retention of it is a bit harder. Anybody have a tab writing program they could recommend? recording the good ideas in ways that can be taken home would help.

I've used Guitar Pro for years now to write my music, from huge ten minutes opuses with drums, keys, bass and multiple guitars, to short little riffs that I wanted to save when I couldn't be bothered to use any recording gear. The sound engine isn't great, and you can't find version 5 without torrenting it any more, but it's a worthwhile investment—I just didn't want to upgrade to the next version so I had to torrent it. I'd obviously rather support the company, but I have no interested in upgrading and I don't think you can buy version five any more.

I also use it as a practise tool. I've always hated metronomes with a passion and couldn't be assed learning how to program a drum machine, so to make sure I remained in the 'pocket', I would use Guitar Pro or Power Tab. Power Tab is a free program. It's decent but nowhere near as detailed. I've used both Power Tab and Guitar Pro to teach students how to read rhythmic notation and tablature; how to compose a solo, layer tracks, and write with a full band; and I've used it as a daily practise tool to jam along to.

I hadn't used it in a while, though, and I wanted to get back into it, so I started writing a few new practise routines for myself. I've been trying to teach myself how to solo in odd groupings, such as moving from 3 notes per beat for two beats, five notes per beat in the next two beats, and then four notes per beat in the following four beats, and repeat. It's excellent for that because you can be sure you're remaining in the groove. It helps you to audibly visualize what you're playing before you play it.

To be honest, though, if you prefer to write in an improvisational manner, just invest in a Zoom recorder. Set it up so that you can see the individual parts as you're playing them and you're away. The audio is very good as well.

This. I got my Q3HD for something like 100 bucks on eBay. Condenser mics and a semi-decent camera. One of the best investments I have ever made.
