Anybody here would be glad to help you if you were to have a less open-ended question, but whats the best amp for X? is pretty hard if not impossible to answer. If you're saying asking for suggestions about a clean and articulate amp, "the best amp" would be a different suggestion than if you're looking for something thick and crunchy.

Ok, best for music like Esoteric and Mournful Congregation.

Not familiar with Esoteric but I know about a year ago Mournful Congregation were using Bogner's I think. Fair amount more than 1200 but a good jumping off point?

I think Earth would be the logical next step. Not sure why I didn't think of that on my own Gotta go slow with this, you cant ram music down people's throats, you have to introduce them, let them get to know each other, wait for the interest to bloom and then when they start asking for more, then you hit em with the god stuff.

I am in agreement with this mentality. If you throw Sleep and Sunn0))) on everyone, it'll only stick to a select few who were already actively pining for such a sound. There are others, myself included, who naturally takes things slower and doesn't accept the hardcore stuff without first experiencing the more melodious styles.

When I first heard The Dillinger Escape Plan years ago, I thought it was a mess of noise and screaming, and didn't touch it again for probably two years. In that time I experienced other bands that more gracefully tapped into similar elements. Then when the right person reintroduced me to them, my brother, it hit home. I had changed obviously in that two years, but my experiences had changed more. It's like being a virgin and going straight to anal with a Moroccan man versus having sex normally with a British or American man for two years and gradually building your way up to 9" up da butt. Best analogy I could think of.

As for my admittedly poor attitude towards jazz, I think it's the "look how smart we are" thing that turns me off, and that may be unfair as it's the people I was exposed to who were like that. When I do hear some decent jazz stuff, I'm always thinking it would be better with some fuzz on it or slowed down or a heavier beat or etc. The whole Improvising within the structure of the song thing too, NOT EXCLUSIVE TO YOU GUYS JAZZ SNOBS! We all do that. No need to put it on a pedestal. And stop wearing those fucking hats! It's not 1920 and you are not outside! Ok, sorry but that.
I WILL be listening to all the suggestions that were made. Even if I end up not liking it, musical recommendations from you lot are always interesting and educational , and way more often than not, I do end up liking

Sabbath was the hinges on the door that opened the way to ALL things heavy. Would the door have opened without them? Yeah, probably, but maybe not in the same way or same time. That band was not the only band going down that road, but they were the ones who made it happen. Children of the grave should be required listening for all sentient beings. In fact, I am going to buy a kayak so I can paddle out into the sound and play it to some Orcas.

You'll never truly appreciate something until you try it out for yourself. Maybe if you delved into the world of jazz it would suck you in and we'd lose you forever.

Ax, if you want to hear some modern jazz shit that is kinda different then the old check out some of the bands I listed a few pages back. Mouse on the keys, Jizue, Contemporary Noise Quintet. They are not heavy but they give a spin on jazz that I think is pretty cool. Someone made a short film to one of the Quintet's songs:

Added bonus for people who don't dig the jazz, I'm pretty sure there are boobs in the video. Just sayin.

And Bossk dude, unfortunately it really comes down to trial and error to find what works for you. People always start by getting the amp that their heroes play or what is typical for the genre you like. You wanna play in a lot of modern metal or post-hardcore bands, get a 5150. You wanna play in an indie rock band, get a small fender, or vox. You wanna play jazz, get a small combo that won't overpower the acoustic instruments you will be playing with. 90s metal or Nu-Metal, mesa triple rec. 80s metal, probably a hot rod marshall. The list goes on. So you really just got to grab something that is probably close you what you want and then go from there. If it doesn't work out then figure out what isn't working and then find something that improves upon it.

Part of the magic of this sect of heavy music is aesthetic can mean as much or as little as you want. An amp can look ugly as fuck but all that matters is you making it work and nearly any ugly ass loud amp is gonna do it.

I also just googled Mournful Congregation gear and found an interview that said:

"Nowadays and on the new album; Jackson Kelly guitar through a Bogner amp. I like to keep it simple. Natural valve distortion on the recording. Live I use a Boss Turbo Distortion pedal if no good valve amp is available. I have also used this pedal on most of the older recordings."

So the two of them use really simple rigs with one guy just relying upon his amp for the cleans and distortions while the other dude uses a bogner most of the time for both cleans and dirt but throws in a boss distortion every now and then. Pretty straight forward. Then they throw in the delay and studio reverb for space.

I'm the same, always have been. I listen to most of the bands that are mentioned here, but I only really LOVE a few of them. Here's a few I would listen to any day of the week and would consider a favourite band:

One of my favourite all time bands is Interpol. Most here would consider that hipster bullshit, but it's cool cause it kinda is. Not really.
