Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I started running a 2 amp rig about 13 years ago and did that shit for a long time, but for about the last 3 -4 years, I've gone back to just using one amp. Well, FUCK THAT. Tonight at practice I'll be pairing my trusty Soldano with my 50 watt Dunwich; been running pedal tests with the Dunwich all week, so I've narrowed it down to few good options for dirt that I think will work well with the Soldano's native crunch. Should be fun- I'm sure it'll piss off the rest of the band, but they can just suck it

just did a little a/b of the v4 and black russian
the ruskie has zero vol drop/tone suck issues
the issue with the v4 isnt a volume loss
it cuts the high frequencies in most of the sweep
so the higher you play on the neck, the more the loss
so if your there when you switch it theres a drop
if you just ride the low string it doesnt change
im guessin the mod fixes that
the russian is more aggressive to my ears
really changes the sound through the cycle
the v4 isnt as sharp
kinda works better for what i use it for
its on alot on the low end of my rig
but if you were just gonna use it sparingly for real phased out quickies
definately the russian is the way to go
and a bonus during this scientific test
TWO STACKED SMALLSTONES
knobs dimed, color switches on:might as well be drums
if my amp was cranked i woulda blown speakers
it sounds like someones tapping them with a screwdriver
one dimed one rolled off is really cool and psychadelic
just a note
the rate knobs at the same position are completely different speeds
12:oo on the russian is around 3:00 on the v4
again its the russians size that keeps it off my board
any questions go for it
ill leave them hooked up for a bit
can do a clip if theres any interest
You're doing god's work, son.
Much obliged. Won't change much for me as I've committed to my Phase 90 but it's good to know if I see somebody going cheapie on the flip.

Forgot a second cable so I wasn't able to run a dual rig but the Matamp on its own sounds so huge.

are you using just straight amp dirt, no pedals? i use a 2203 as well, but i run into the low gain channel, preamp dimed so there's just a bit of hair on it when you dig in and some sizzle at high volumes and i use pedals for the real high gain. the amp alone, even on the high gain input doesn't have quite the amount that i need. takes all pedals great the way i use it, not sure how a reverb will sound though if you're in the high gain channel using amp gain. get one used. it's worth a try, you probably won't lose money on it if it doesn't work out.
CaptainBoxman wrote:ABY pedal that isn't shit, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg?
radial bigshot. it's passive, so you don't get LED indicators, which would be annoying for me, but aren't a big deal for most folks. particularly if you're not doing any switching and just have both outs on all the time. even being passive it has ground isolation and phase reverse switch. and they're real affordable. the radial twin city is really awesome and not a ton more for active ab/y with some cool options.
Bossk wrote:Whats better? The ghost echo or supermoon chrome?
i've actually been thinking about getting a supermoon. they sound killer. my roommate has one that he uses a fair bit in his band and it sounds really good. he's a big fan. but it's kind of a different beast. i use the ghost echo as an always on pedal for the most part. it adds its touch to my foundation. i wouldn't want to have modulated reverb like the supermoon on all the time. it sounds great for those haunting doom cleans and all, and someone could probably get some spacey gain parts sounding good with it, but it's certainly not what i would have on all the time. if i were going to have only one reverb, which i currently do, i need it to be a versatile simple basic awesome sound. the super moon is more what i would consider for a second reverb.

I so need to replace the crappy one the wife bought. I had been against getting one as I knew it would turn into a rabbits hole of me spending money on vinyl. She knew I wanted one but wasn't going to buy one for this reason. Bless her evil blackened little heart, she went out and bought one. Unfortunately she's no audiophile. So it's a cheapy modern multi function not very good sounding pos. I need to start hitting garage sales and find something decent.
it's actually surprising how cheap a lot of really cool turntables go for on ebay and craigsilist and such. i got this thing yesterday for $10. i've seen it now on the web at a few places for $2-300 and there's audiophile forum people who like them, but there's also plenty of completed ebay listings and such for under $100. i was driving around today and stopped at a flea market and saw a dude selling two different DUAL turntables, one with an old school shure cartridge, which is probably $100 on it's own. he had them for $30 and $40. i think those tables sell for 2-300ish pretty regularly. do a little research to find a table that's a bit off the map but has a good reputation for sounding good and hopefully has a cartridge and needle than you can find replacements for and then look around. you can find killer turntables for $50 all the time. almost any old 70's or early 80's direct drive will end up being cool.
i also had a similar thought when i put a record on this thing and heard how good it sounded. i was like, "shit, this is a kind of good table i got for cheap and it sounds good. i wonder what's up with those really fancy things." i can't afford to go down a rabbit hole of $600 and more turntables and ungodly amounts on speakers and receivers. but i might look into some more good shit you can get for cheap. it really is cool to hear the records sound a bit better.

Hard choice. I have never played a ghost echo but every video I see of it makes it look so good. I think the supermoon has a longer delay time and the modulation can get more funky. As someone else was saying the ghost might be better for shorter reverb times that make your sound full while the supermoon is good for more atmospherics.
I have the supermoon chrome and love it but it is slightly different then the normal supermoon. If I remember right the chrome has a slightly different reverb character and can go 100% wet.

Very nice. Probably how I would do it if I had your gear

Parker, I'll keep an eye out. Probably will need to do some homework first.
looks like I'll be learning about turntables now
