i don't think you need to worry about a foreign power invading the US. not only do we have enough arms to kill the world 10 times over, but the sheer size of the country makes conquering and occupying that amount of territory as difficult in terms of men and materiel as conquering Russia, which is axiomatically impossible. you'd also either need to fortify the northern border or take Canada as well...the border there is a 3000 mile open door that would be a bitch to defend even with modern technology.
