On a lark, I picked up this little gem from Ebay...

I say "gem", since for $200, I wasn't really expecting much. I had been looking for a project amp a la AC30 to maybe mod or play around with. I dropped a set of JJ's in the v1 and v2 spots, a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the PI spot, and a set of Sovtek L84M's for the power section. Can run in pentode or triode mode. Can sweep between A or AB mode. Has automatic biasing for the power tubes. Has DI output.

I am totally blown away. I thought that it would be meh at best, but this little sucker has totally surprised me. Whether in triode, or pentode mode, class A or AB (or anywhere in between), it's scary good. Plugged into a 2x12 amp loaded with Texas Heat's, going over half on the volumes was plenty to shake the house rafters. Cleans are pristine, and the dirties are dirty, but in a good way. With my LAB Series L5 preamp pedal in front. it kicks major booty. I piggybacked a Gemini IIi fuzz on that, and it was total doom.

Yes, it's made in China, and who knows how long it'll last, but you know, at $200 clams (not including the tubes), VERY surprising. Worst case scenario, if something does blow on it, it'll be a good base for modding. The seller was cool enough to send me all the schematics and CAD drawing for an enclosure to boot. :thumb:

What does sweeping between A and AB do?

I've had really good luck with my China made budget amps. My main amp is a Pignose g40v I modified the circuit a bit on and it's given me 0 problems, stock transformers and all... I also made a P1 extreme out of an Elektar tube 10 and haven't had any problems with that either. Although you do have alot more going on inside there, it's clean looking!

Courtesy of Soldano;

Class A and Class A/B are terms that describe how the power tubes work within the power section of a guitar amplifier. To properly explain the technical differences between these classes of operation would require a lengthy discussion. However, in short, the differences can be summarized as follows:

Class A/B amps tend to have greater dynamics, sound punchier, tighter, cleaner, and have cooler running tubes. The Class A amp sounds more vintage and squishy, because it’s compressing and distorting more. Tubes in a Class A amp tend to run hotter, as well. For the same given tube compliment, Class A/B will produce two-to-three times as much power as Class A. An example would be an amplifier with two 6L6s in the power section. Operating in Class A, the maximum power we could expect would be around 20 watts, while operating in Class A/B would easily yield 50 watts.

There's definitely some magic in some of those vintage amps. I've got a '57 Harvard that was modified for a 12 (by the way, I think Celestions and tweeds are such a great combination...really brings out an entirely different personality in a Fender) but it really sounds great especially with the voltage dropped to 110 or so.
