I never really saw the point until I started building a bigger board and tried running my gain pedals straight into the front of my amp and mod/delay/verb into the loop. It makes a huge difference—which I like—but sometimes the dirtier sound of everything in front is preferable. I feel like it just varies depending on the application :idk:

I feel like a lot of people see "effects loop" and assume that's where your effects have to go, which is why it leads to things that sound bad and people being really dogmatic about it.

That said, I've never used one because my amps have never had them :)

Yeah they're almost an amp luxury add-on. Certainly cool and useful, but might be last in the list of practical things one actually "needs" on an amp.

Like many in this board I have plenty of pedals. Nice to have delay/reverb before the the loop and in the loop.

Best of both worlds.

Loops give you the option for subtlety which with reverb and delay is often not an option when running out front if there is any amount of OD in the preamp.

Definitely understandable, I think the only thing I would but into it is my echoplex if I ever actually fix it. Im too lazy too even care about it. My reverb and delays are a bit subtle as it is so I never really cared about the bit of grit I get from my sovtek but I could see if you played more ambient stuff or different cleaner genre's that could be a pain if you want amp dirt too.

All this effects loop talk has inspired me. I'm gonna make sure next head I get has a loop and instead of having 1 massive board I'll do 2 boards...one with all dirt that'll run into the front then the other with modulation/delay through the loop. I have a feeling that would help cut back on some of my excess noise and sound better. 2017 goals.

You can also have everything on one board but add a patch bay for routing so you have your amp input and also the effects send and return cables. Here's one I use currently. It has mutes for signals to two amp rigs as well as a footswitch for changing channels on an amp.

I have something similar on my board for the same purpose. Channel switching/routing/tuner out/buffer/etc.

On another note, I put my Shiv back in the headshell, and have been running it into an old Traynor 2x12 that I loaded with some NOS EV SP12b's. It's amazing.

Yep! makes setup and teardown super quick and easy. Everything is color coded so all cables can be run in 30 seconds.

My pedalboard is already pretty small that it probably wouldn't benefit me as much as you guys thats for sure. Especially for someone who does both bass and guitar duties like you. That switcher is really rad, I should make something like that. Especially if I get an amp that has two channels or whatever.

I'm really excited for this. Thinking about a 50 watt Street Sweeper, as well, with a matching cab. I just sold enough gear (and can sell one of my new amps that isn't working for me, I think) to make this all happen.
