Oslo, Norway here. I play in a couple of bands. One called Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson(www.ypofh.com) and another one called Ben Leiper (https://www.facebook.com/benleiper) . Started laying guitar because of pedals. Never really learnt how to play the guitar, but learnt how to play pedals.

hello, i live in Chiang Rai Thailand. I have enjoyed reading this site for a few years now but only just joined this year. I am really thankful for all the information that is shared here and also for people's youtube channels as well. Because it has been so helpful and enjoyable in my life, i hope that maybe i can contribute in some way too for other people, even if it is only really small. It has been a big part of my life so thank you everyone. It is really difficult to find equipment and information about things here in Thailand.

The current music here outside of pop music is not very diverse. Most of the music here is based in folk, electronic, or sometimes alternative. There is almost no post rock, metal, etc. or things that are really aggressive. And if people do this type of music, they usually just copy another band that is already successful. In pop culture, pop music /rock and djing in clubs/bars are the main forms of music outside of traditional music. Experimental music or different forms of music outside of pop and traditional music are not really encouraged deeply here. If people want to have any sort of financial support, usually they must focus on having an audience outside of Thailand to survive and continue to have opportunities. Normal Thai culture does not really encourage art expression in general outside of traditional practices or things with nationalist/religious support. There are small groups that have worked hard to organise and promote new forms of music and expression, but it has been very difficult as social and economics here continue to become more unstable. One of the biggest supporters in the past, a small label called So:On Dry Flower just announced this new years that they decided to close down and not continue any longer. This is becoming more and more common with labels and events outside of electronic music or club culture. Also, the standard of living/ financial resources are a lot lower here than places like in EU and USA. Thai people do not have as much money to use on luxury items. Music equipment is considered very expensive here and it is very hard to find people that are educated about it also. This is a big reason why people play a lot of folk style music as well. It is easier to just buy an acoustic guitar and play with friends or a band and is much less expensive. Because of this, many people don't really care or know about or have the opportunity/resources to record music as well. This is slowly changing, but is very common here. Outside of Bangkok and Chiang Mai there is not a lot of resources or opportunities for these things. And with the current military occupation here and the censorship of anything challenging the military or royal family, this only continues to make it more difficult for anyone who wishes to do something outside of normal thought.

Hello, all.

My name is Ryan. I was born and raised a few miles north of Seattle. Currently, I go to school in Ithaca, NY, where I study Double Bass Performance. If you couldn't guess, my primary instrument is double bass, but I do play bass guitar a lot as well. I enjoy listening to and playing almost any kind of music.

That really sounds like the situation in most places in the US, too.
When you talk about folk, is that rooted in traditional Thai music or more like what we'd think of as folk in the west? Is there any experimental music that uses the inexpensive folk instruments but recontextualizes in interesting ways?
