Those are going to be tits.

I've made the decision to get new tubes for the Laney and then shop it.
I want a new amp. Every time I pick up an older one it's been a nightmare and I'm at my limit.
Anyone know what that Dunwich wait list looks like?

in the meantime, there are good amps going for sale all the time!

i know you're not on facebook...but there are a couple sale groups on there, and there is usually some good stuff going for sale on there for very reasonable prices.

also...there's this guy in sydney called EB amps...sells heads for under $1000...but they only go up to 45w...so not sure if that would do it for you. On the plus side though he makes a marshall bass/lead type head which sounds amazing...I bought a 25w version for home playing, it sounds pretty damn close to my Super Bass and perfect with pedals.

So, I just got home and cranked this JMP. Sounded amazing for about 5 minutes and then the power lights went off and the sound died out. Checked the fuses and neither are blown. Opened it up and I can't tell that anything has been zapped. Where they changed the caps for the 6550 bias is a little weird though. It's got a cap with one leg attached and the other floating. I'm not sure what that it supposed to be about. Pic is uploading to photo bucket now. I hope it isnt the tubes or the transformer. I'm fucking pissed though. Waited 2 more hours than what they told me and paid about a hundred more bucks than the guy quoted me on the phone. Paid a rush service on top of that to not have to make a 2 and a half hour one way trip back up there to pick it up and I'm still gonna have to make the drive.    :picard:

fuck...this is the stuff that scares me off vintage amps. My Super Bass, before I sold it, was cutting out like you mentioned, it did it twice, and tubes were good as was the fuse and it had had a full look over by a tech.

I hope it comes good in the end man.

edit: i did tell the buyer before he bought it...but he didnt seem to fussed by it.

It's sort of part and parcel when it comes to vintage amps, though.

That sucks so bad. I'm sorry to hear that and I hope you can get it squared away. I really hope it's not the transformer. Anything else can be replaced, but part of the magic of those is those drake transformers, although supposedly Mercury makes a pretty good replacement, but that's a spendy fix. I had to take my jmp to the shop twice when I first got it to get old amp issues fixed and have it running up to standard. Neither time was terribly expensive thankfully, but it's been solid as hell since then. Have you tried checking the preamp tubes with a known good one? That's usually my first at home non-tech guy test. Or checking the power tube sockets for any signs of arcing. Good luck. I'm sure it'll be worth it if you can get it going. It'll sound awesome.

In other news, I'm pretty sure that my band has finally actually finished the final mix for our new recording, which we've been working on forever. We'll actually hear the finished product tomorrow. So we'll see, but I'm so ready to have this done.

Talked with Clifton last night, Mains Fuse value was off. It had not adjusted from the 2A value used for 220-240V mains vs the 4A value for 120V mains. So it may have tripped early. That is the first thing he will fix and then re-test

Tracked down the correct fuses this morning. Started off playing cleans for about 5 minutes with the master on 2, then increased to 6 in 5 min increments. Switched to fuzz and did the same thing. Once I jammed with it at stage volume, I looped a riff and let it go for about 20 minutes a little louder than what I will usually do and watched the tubes. Here's a clip. The batteries in my Zoom are dead so I shot it on a cell phone.

Solid. As far as that odd resistor, if its not doing any harm then you dont have to mess with it but it is a little weird.
