Also, PY is effin deep. I don't think I've ever messed with an analog pedal that I can turn and tweak and have it seem so endless. Obviously, presets would be too easy. This thing is about twist and fuck that and twist and drool
After much USPS shenanigans I got my Pretty Years in the mail and spent a good few hours with it. The depth really is incredible. This thing is a true swiss army knife of distorted tones, and it feels more like a piece of studio gear than a stompbox.
Brian, if you want to provide any insight into this I'm really curious. Are all the tube stages inverting or are some of them cathode followers? I think a lot of the beauty of the filter matrix comes from the phase relationship between stages, and the phase changes produced by the filter itself. I'm mostly familiar with op amp SVFs where HP, BP, and LP all have different phase shifts (e.g. HP and LP are 180° out of phase) but I imagine this VCF has a similar thing going on. Either way, that mix of positive and negative feedback at different frequencies is incredibly fun and I'm consistently surprised and mesmerized.
That being said I've gotten some amazing tones with the filter totally out of the circuit, just by playing with the EQ and gain settings. No bass cut + high gain clipping on the first stage = a truly nice heavy tone. And I love me a good James stack.
Ok, so, right. Bowled over.
- fantastic looking pedal
- so much fun to play around with!
- totally rad t-shirt
- great looking LP (haven't had time to listen to music today yet)
- I randomly mentioned a preference for serial #11 and I got it!
Clips? Yes, two Instagram quickies so far:
1. Some birdtweets (PY) and sustained lines (Zap Machine + OT10) looped on the Echoplex, the PY is mangling a sampled slide on the B-string played backwards/randomly by the Count To Five: https://www.instagram.com/p/BKTMnSeABDO/

I love that your avatar is a recording of a TV. Why not just find the video online?
Haha! I wouldn't know where to find it, it was a recording of a video at an art gallery that I thought was cool, and then I neglected to take down the artist. I quite like the effect anyway!

That suck, man! My SSBS shipment just got updated. It's in customs. So yay and boo at the same time. Should have the pedal on Thursday then, but looks like I'm in for 25% import tax and a $20+ customs fee. FML.
