The closest i would figure is you could approach doing something like this in a DAW, or maybe the OP-1 or Octatrack through really convoluted means, but it actually is pretty cool what this thing could be used for when you start thinking about playing old Cassette albums with it. However, i fear this thing would break the motors on the tape player so quickly? Also the funny side effect of this thing being partially mechanical is that there is a small Glissando/Portamento between notes that would always be at a fixed rate and can never be avoided?vidret wrote:Ugly Nora wrote:
Well I am not really talking about the pitching as the unique feature, I am talking about the "randomness" of what is played when you press a key. So for example, I can stick a Pink Floyd tape in as my source material and let it play for 45 minutes. Now, I can sit there a press just 1 key on this thing for 45 minutes and it will always be a different sound because the source material is constantly changing. In my limited experience of my sp 404 for example, whenever I press a key, it always plays from the beginning of the sample; the sample is not "rolling" in the background. Make sense? Does the Op1 allow the sample to "roll" like that?
It is similar in nature to this synth I saw Brian Eno playing one time, where each time he hit a key, it was a different sound/patch. So, it was a completely random experience.
oh right, ofc. hmm. to continually pitch a sample that is playing according to keypresses. i'm not sure, gonna say no before trying. maybe there is a way but it'd be way different.

Since I still record all my shit on tapes, imagine running that Mazetools app through a recorder then use the tape in the OM-1.Inconuucl wrote:Can you put anything through it? If soyou can have a drone patch with really slow flanger going on and since the pitch shifting is post effects it will make for really interesting timbres.

I think it's a really cool instrument, and if my life was taking me in the direction of still having a full time job and a home studio, i'd probably try one out at some point, because the exact idea you're talking about sounds amazing to me. Doing something clever with figuring out the pitches and speeds of a song on cassette and changing that with with CV inputs, synced to a drum machine and other synths or something, could be incredible, or at least make a really fun remix machine. Where i'm at right now that's not happening, but good luck with it, and please keep us updated.Ugly Nora wrote:Good point. it's relative of course, I guess it just caught me off guard so I thought it was funny. usually that amount of money to invest in something for me is not followed by "what could go wrong" and I would instead say "if i'm spending $285 this piece of gear better be the SHIT"Ugly Nora wrote:You folks really don't think $285 is a reasonable price for a handmade totally unique item? This is ILF. These cheap bastards think 150 is too much for a fuzz pedal.Ugly Nora wrote:Can you do what I described on an Op1?vidret wrote:yeah for 285$ how can you go wrong
