I'm admittedly not super familiar with Ty's catalog, but I did just see them play last night and they played Emotional Mugger as like half their set. I do know what you mean by not as immediate, but I really like how playful it is. &here's some cool rhythmic stuff going on in a lot of the songs. My favorite of their set was actually "The Magazine", that super laid back track at the end. It felt so good to hear that groove played real loud.

EDIT: after listening to some EM tracks again, I definitely preferred that material live.
Ty sounds more restrained on the record, where as live he's kinda going nutso.
